Need updated driver for ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
I have a Toshiba Tecra laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000; driver 6.13.10.6280. Has been great to use to play WOW on (few screwy video probs) until WOW's last patch. Now, I can barely see anything in the game.
(DirectX is the latest, but I can not find a more current video driver (current is like 4/2004). All links to updated driver seem broke, and ATI doesn't seem to support the 9000 anymore. Can any kind soul point me in the right direction, and give detailed instructions? I have to travel a lot, and playing WOW really helps ![]() Many thanks, Eric |

If you haven't already, you really should read the Sticky Post at the top of the forum list by Randomness on the "The Epic Legacy..." - you'll learn a lot - it's worth it.
ATI driversets, as you note, do not directly support your chip after the Catalyst 6.5s - although some modded sets do - Omegadrive's among those that do - but frankly he adds installation support - not necessarily exhausitive play testing as he doesn't own every chip his driversets support. You may need to some hunting and pecking with driversets to get yours working instead of using the latest driverset from your manufacturer. What is your exact model number?

I have the exact same model with the exact same driver and have been having the exact same problem with Wow! Whenever I load the game, my screen is mostly one color, with some shading. I read through some of the thread by Randomness, but I didn't see anything regarding the Mobility Radeon 9000 in those posts. Anyone found a solution or have a link for updated drivers for this chip?

Found a solution! Basically, if you use the mobility mod (here's the link: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool/ ) and follow the instructions there, you'll be fine. Here are some tips that might help.
Go to ATI's website and download the most recent catalyst for Radeon (NOT Radeon Mobility); it should be 6.11. Here's the link that I used (I have Windows XP Professional): http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/x...rer300-xp.html Go through the install process for that (at the end you'll get an error message - this is normal). Then download the Mobility mod from the link above and use it. It will take you through a number of different installations, but once it's done, restart your computer and play some WoW! It worked for me and it sounds like I had the same problem on the same computer you did. Hope this helps. |

catalyst 6.x series
so the catalyst drivers before 6.5 support the mobility radeon 9000?
the driver i have for it is quite old (2002) and it's apparently causing windows to crash. i don't think i'll be needing to update it all the time (this comp isn't used for gaming). i looked on the ati website and the release notes said the oldest card supported was the 9600 series. i guess i'm looking for the latest official ati driver that will support the 9000. can anyone help? |

Turns out...
The Catalyst 6.5 version was supposed to be last version of ATI driverset that supported the 9000 card (among others...). However, AMD/ATI does support that particular card in the Catalyst version 6.11 as well. Versions 6.6 through 6.10 do not directly support the 9000 Radeon, although there are modded sets, such as Omegadrive's driversets, that do. Now, that being said, this applies to the desktop cards only. You would still need to download the latest 6.11 set from AMD/ATI (or the ever dependable and speedy www.driverheavendownloads.net site) and use the DH ModTool as mentioned above to modify the set to work with the 9000 Mobile chip.

Hello:
Long story short: To properly run WoW with newest patch, you will need to install a modded version Catalyst 5.10 or newer. Any Radeon core based on anything below the Radeon 9500 (pre-R300 core) will not work with the new 6.6 -- 6.10 catalyst drivers. Or the main version of Catalyst 6.11 (released for the newer X1K and 9500 + cards) the "pre-R300" Catalyst 6.11 has very little difference in internal version compared to the Catalyst 6.5 Patje's Mobility mod tool is usually the simpliest way to make your own drivers. Or you could try Omega's drivers based on Catalyst 5.10 to 6.5. Omega's drivers still use the core catalyst files, so even though they will install on pre-R300 based Radeon chips, you may still encounter instability in games, or BSODs when using Omega Drivers based on anything newer than version 6.5. Take care, Good luck, and Happy Holidays. - Randomness |

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
You guys are the best...just got my 4-year-old Uniden clone with a Radeon Mobility 9000 working with directx 9.0c so I could run Everquest again. Catalyst 6.11 drivers and the MobilityModder did the trick. Thanks so much. |

First I would like to say thanks for writing the mod. I have wanted to update my video drivers on my laptop for a long time now. Unfortunately Direct X does not appear to be working with two programs, the ones I use on my laptop. ANARK & Acrobat 3D I must be doing something wrong or the mod is just not working.
I have a SYNTAX LAPTOP with an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 I did a re-install of XP. Before I formatted the hard drive I could use Direst X 8. It worked great with the above programs. I need to use Direct X 8 or 9 so I would gladly sacrifice this upgrade to get the old drivers back but I can not find them anywhere. I would actually prefer to use these new drivers and have direct X work. I am using ATI drivers = 8-1_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_57717.exe Mod tool = New version is 0.8.8.0 The old drivers were version= 6.1310.6280 DATE= 2.13.2003 |

Hello:
The Radeon 9000 GPU will not function with Catalyst Drivers newer then version 6.5 ; Try using modded drivers based on Catalyst 6.4 or 6.5 ; There is also a Driver version with a "pre-r300" label available from ATI that you can also mod, it is based on version 6.11 ; You can get this driver is you pick a Radeon graphics card/chipset that is older than the Radeon 9550. (ie// pick the Radeon 9250, or 7500....etc). Good luck, take care. - Randomness |

Driver version 6.5 or 6.11's are the only options for the radeon 9000 series... you MUST use them as nothing newer will work.

ok, I un-installed the 81 drivers using add remove programs and then device driver and re-started. I extracted the 611 drivers to C: When running the mod tool . . . I get an error box with a ton of text saying it will not work. This text starts with . . . System.reflection.TargetInvocationException: Has been thrown by the target of an invocation. . . . WOW it goes on and on like that.
I reinstalled the other required programs again and tried the mod tool again. I get the same error message. I checked the remove program and looked for the mod tool and found catalyst was still there. I tried to remove it and . . . it will not go. I am considering re-installing the os . . . |

GOOD NEWS . . . It worked ! ! ! Thanks Randomness and Judas !!! Direct X 9c is now working as it should.
BAD NEWS . . . I had to re-install XP, no restore point worth useing. I modified the directions for the mod tool. They are still a little out of order but a person can figure it out. ***** http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php { Installation step by step guide, moded } {{{ CREATE A RESTORE POINT }}} 1: Download MSXML 4.0 from Microsoft. Install. Step 2 is VISTA ONLY 2: Make sure UAC control in Vista is turned off. If you don't know how to do this then read this guide (method 4 is the easiest) or click the "disable UAC" in Mobility Modder.net - please note you MUST reboot after disabling UAC. If you don't want it disabled permanently, you can turn it back on after our mobility tool has finished, but it won't mod the drivers correctly with UAC ON. 3: Download the newest desktop drivers from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (or get them from Driver Heaven Downloads). If you are using Windows XP make sure to download .net framework from Microsoft (this is built into Windows Vista so there is no need to install it). ***** {Driver version 6.5 or 6.11's are the only options for the radeon 9000 series} The Radeon 9000 GPU will not function with Catalyst Drivers newer then version 6.5 ; Try using modded drivers based on Catalyst 6.4 or 6.5 ; There is also a Driver version with a "pre-r300" label available from ATI that you can also mod, it is based on version 6.11 ; You can get this driver is you pick a Radeon graphics card/chipset that is older than the Radeon 9550. (ie// pick the Radeon 9250, or 7500....etc). ***** Catalyst™ 6.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition { NOV 16 2006 } Catalyst™ 6.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition ***** OR = Drivers & Software { XP pro/radeon/Radeon 9250 Series } ***** 4: Run the downloaded driver, let it extract into c:/ATI/SUPPORT - but cancel the installation once the driver is extracted. 5: Run Mobility Modder - browse to the driver in C:ATI/SUPPORT/ - an example of Catalyst 7.4 would be C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-4_vista32_dd_ccc_enu_44985 - hit modify. Wait until driver is modified. 6: In Vista, go to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-4_vista32_dd_ccc_enu_44985 (Or whatever the driver installation folder was called), and run the SETUP.EXE. Please note you might see a "Driver is not WHQL certified", ignore this, as it is a side effect of the modification. 7: Wait until Install is finished and reboot. Enjoy the new drivers! ***** You might want to use these links: Microsoft Download Center Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Download details: .NET Framework 3.5 MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services) Download details: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services) XPE QFE: Direct X 9.0c for XP Embedded SP1 (883956) Download details: XPE QFE: Direct X 9.0c for XPE Windows Media Player Download Download Center Windows Media Encoder 9 Series Download details: Windows Media Encoder 9 Series MOD TOOL http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php |

Thanks for the mod tool. Maybe you should update the directions for it's use. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php
Is it possible to make the moded drivers available instead? It would seem that after step5. Those drivers would work if downloaded unless other or computer specific changes are being made by the mod tool? I guess it would not be as fun either, maybe not legal ? |

Have any of you tried using the Omega drivers based on the 6.5 cats? I'm running my laptop with them now and everything is peachy. Might want to give them a shot.
also, welcome all, to DH. |

Go here http://www.driverheavendownloads.net/omegadrive.htm and DL the drivers based on the 6.5 cats. Uninstall your current driver within the "add/remove" panel, and run DriverCleaner if you have it. Install the Omega Drivers and see what you get. After that, if you are getting the DX error still, go to the MS website and DL and try to reinstall DX. You're problem may not be with DX, though it says it is. I'd try to update your driver first. Good luck. |
