Macbook Pro ATI Mobility Freeze Issue?
Hi guys,
Recently got a new Macbook Pro 17inch 2.33ghz. Very nice. Got Windows XP booted fine. Tested a few games....runs pretty nice. Tried several drivers, found the omega work the best. Now my problem is... All my games run fine except for Age of Pirates: Carribean Tales yes...i can hear you all laughing and yes i know this game is riddled with problems. most they apparently fixed in the recent 1.43 patch. but the problem that i have had for a while is....when i am at sea, in the game (which is probably when video card is relied on the most) within 20secs to 5mins my computer freezes then reboots... I know the macbook pro ati cards are supposedly underclocked by apple, and i have a feeling the card in windows is running at faster clock speed, because of the fan spinds faster/louder. but does anyone else have any idea what the problem could be? it doesn't shutdown doing anything else, except this game! i've tried underclocking my video card to like 430/430 and slightly less. but it still seems to happen. any ideas whether its a heat issue? do macbooks reset when high temps are reached? or does it sound like a similar issue the earlier macbook pros had, which was apparently fixed? but seems to be in the new macbook pros? i really want to play this stupid bloody game. and no one wants to help someone with a mac running windows xp. thought someone might be able to shed some light on this matter.. cheers daniel Last edited by sikchops; Dec 14, 2006 at 12:16 PM. |

A bit of fan help might fix the heat issue.
My suggestion is to download smcFanControl. I believe the newest copy is 1.23. Anyway if you have FanControl 1.1 the preference prog that is out there you need to uninstall it as it will conflict with smcFanControls ability to start the fan going. So to make sure it is not a temperature issue. You go into OSX start smcFanControl and set it to 5000 6000 rpms. This really does a great job of coolings down which you can watch in OSX by using TempMonitor or use little one that comes with smc. Anyhow after it gets the fans up to go speed restart. Do not close smcFanControls. Just use the Apple -> Restart command and then hold options and go straight to windows. You should still hear the fans a going and if the heat was a problem hopefully this will solve it.
P.S. The OmegaDriver.net Drivers did the trick for me when playing WoW and Half-Life/CounterStrike. Cheers, Nick Fellow Owner of a 17" MacBook Pro and Gamer |
