Need help; is retarded.

while i was trying to setup my catalyst drivers a while back on my ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300, they had me delete the old updates from my computer. When trying to install the new driver, it would go through the whole gambit of pre-installation questions, like "do you abide by the terms..." "Complete or custom install..." "Will you sell your soul to the ATI Company..." blah blah blah. when the red ATI back screen comes up, an error message is prompted saying that 'Video Drivers/Card not found' or something to that effect. clicking okay, it would then prompt another message saying "Try setting up with a standard VGA Driver" or, again, something to that effect. Obviously, this frightened me, so i ran away with my tail betwixt my legs. i then opened up the game that i had been playing at the time (also a game that requires some graphical bollocks), F.E.A.R. and played it without any issue. i then forgot about the problem, until i plopped in Half Life 2: Episode One. the game would start sometimes, prompting the first screen. clicking on 'New Game' it would then get stuck at about 60% loaded, though it wouldn't crash or stall. other times, the game would not startup, instead getting stuck at the FIRST loading screen. mind you, Half Life 2 itself played fine. Do i need to reinstall the whole damn card via CD? I'd have tried that already, but i can't find the freakin CD. Can i d/l the initial VGA data or get just a CD from somewhere? is that even my problem?

System Specs

Usually when the " hardware not found " error occurs it is related to a previous drivers not being uninstalled the way that it should have been uninstalled prior to even starting the new install of the new updated drivers.
