Problem with Mobility Radeon 7500
I'm having a problem when my graphics card where it stops outputting to either display. It seems to be completely random as to when it happens. I know it's causing some kind of stop error because Windows gives me a report after I restart it, but I can't see the report as the screen goes black.
The Windows report says it's a problem with the driver but I've tried all sorts from Dell's own version to ATi Catalyst for 7500 modded with Mobility Modtool and now I'm using Omega (Catalyst 6.5). Although the Omega drivers have fixed a graphics glitch in WoW, the laptop still randomly blacks out. Does anyone know what could be causing it? Dell Latitude C640 Mobility Radeon 7500 Windows XP ---- It appears upon further inspection to be the dreaded ATI/WinXP Infinite Loop problem... I'm currently trying to find a solution for it, but so far no luck. Last edited by Acaeris; Mar 7, 2007 at 06:16 PM. |

Hello:
A log entry was more than likely entered into your system's event log. You can access it by clicking Start --> run --> eventvwr.msc Look under the "System" section around the time the crash or blackout occured. It certainly sounds like a driver problem. If the problem started before you first installed the Omega drivers, or any modded drivers (ie// the problem started while using OEM drivers) than it may be a sign of overheating, or other hardware issue (BIOS update needed, damaged cable). If the problems started after some driver update, or the installation of a modded Catalyst driver (like Omega Drivers) it is likely there is some driver installtion corruption, or misconfigured registry entry. Find a copy of DriverCleaner (version 1.5 is the last free version, i think) or download the Catalyst Uninstall tool from ati.amd.com ; remove any and all Omega / ATi drivers from your system, and then re-install your OEM drivers ; If you intend on using modded drivers, i would suggest caution with any driver between the version 6.6 to 6.10 ; Some laptops need the OEM drivers to be installed first, and then manually "updated" through device manager, otherwise it may corrupt multiple display configurations. good luck, and take care, -Randomness. |

Last Three "Error" messages in Event Viewer (all today):

I don't think it's overheating as my laptop can happily run normally for hours no problem, yet other times (after being off for 8-10 hours) it will lock up after just 10 minutes (The laptop still being cold). I've read about the stop error on a lot of forums and it appears to be a common problem with no obvious solution (even ATI and Microsoft aren't sure). I'll try your ideas and see what happens... |

hello again,
That stop error is usually only common with the Radeon IGP 3xxM shipset when 1 of 2 things happens 1) bad driver mod / installation 2) installed drivers based on Catalyst 6.6 or newer It is also sometimes a stop error given when the GPU overheats, But the GPU doesn't heat up very much under heavy load unless damaged, or a dirty / mal-seated heatsink assembly. Under normal circumstances this chip generally can't overheat unless its been overclocked. Atitray is third party program used for tweaking / overclocking Radeon graphics cards. It isn't very compatible with notebook implimentations of the Radeon cores. It is very likely that this program is causing the driver corruption. I would suggest removing the program, and all installed ATI software, followed by a fresh driver install (preferrably OEM drivers, and then "update" to a modded driverset). Good luck, and take care. - Randomness |
