I have an Acer Ferrari 3200 laptop, which has a Radeon 9800 (128MB) chipset built-in. I would really like to use modern drivers with it, but, after years (literally) of trying out most of the major releases since v5.3, I still can't get it to work properly.
What happens is this:
- Install latest drivers (either hacked ATI drivers or an unofficial variant, like Omega)
- Reboot
- Windows loads fine, desktop shows up fine - no slow down or corruption
- Launch any game and I get a black screen as the chipset mode shifts like normal, but then it doesn't come back on again (it's still backlit though)
- Alt-F4 back to the desktop, but the display remains blank
- Reboot and I'm back to step 3.
I'm at my wit's end with this and really want to run up-to-date drivers. However, ATI's Mobility detection tool refuses to install drivers for me, saying my configuration isn't compatible.
Does anyone have any advice that might help?
