Hi
I have repaired the power inlet and the Li-Ion charger in an an old COMPAL CQ12 3GHz/512MB notebook with an onboard 32MB ATI Mobility 7500 GPU. The notebook is more or less identical to an ACER Travelmate 420 and to several other well known brands ;-) I have tried the modded Catalyst 5.12 -> 6.5 -> 7.5 but none of them completely works - they install OK and boot OK - BUT: 5.12 - 6.5: Have issues with the normal DxDiag tests - driver returns as if a key interrupted the D3D test (DxDiag reports this). Some times this disappears after rebooting Windows XP - hmm! 7.5: The DxDiag D3D tests are all grayed out - so no help there! Of course D3D games have problems too - but I guess it is smarter to start fixing the DxDiag tests ;-) I read somewhere (Omega?) that the lates Catalyst drivers supporting the ATI Mobillity 7500 should be Catalyst 6.5??? - any coments? Should I concentrate on the 6.5 drivers or the newest ATI Catalyst drivers (currently 7.5)? Any help on this one would be apreciated. Cheers zEnterHacker |

Yep, done that with same results as Catalyst 6.5 - I guess the mentioned Omega driver contains modified Catalyst 6.5.
I have investigated a little deeper into the matter: UninstallATI drivers from CP Safe Mode soft boot -> DriverCleaner Pro 1.5 -> Remov all ATI Normal soft boot -> Install Catalyst 6.5 Normal soft boot -> Install Catalyst 6.5 CC Normal soft boot -> DirectX D3D test fails (test interrupted due to user key activation - well I, for sure, did not press any keys - so I guest the test just failed unexpectedly) <Here comes the funny thing> Normal soft boot -> DirectX D3D test PASSES and games run ok. Normal soft boot -> DirectX D3D test PASSES and games still run ok. Normal hard boot (Power off -> on) -> DirectX D3D test fails Normal soft boot -> DirectX D3D test passes and games run ok. OK so it looks like som kind of initialization value that is kicked in very late in "the process" and then lost when making a power recycling reset. I cannot turn to the manufacturer and complain about missing drivers cause COMPAL has not released anything for the CQ12 for several years :-( Any bright ideas guys? I also have a Radeon Mobility 7500... 64MB though
Unfortunately your hunch is correct, as of 6.6 and later, several older models including the 7500 are no longer supported. You're only option really is to uninstall any ATI drivers you have and use the OMEGA 3.8.321 drivers based on the Catalyst 6.3 driver set. You can find them here: Download Radeon Omega Driver 3.8.231 I myself have tried the 3.8.252 (Catalyst 6.5) drivers which should theoretically work, but for some reason you lose an emmense amount of functionality on the 7500 with them, i.e DirectX doesn't detect any kind of hardware acceleration (DirectDraw, D3D, AGP) so your desktop and gaming will slow to a crawl. It sucks but hey, at least you can download the 6.3's and never have to worry about your drivers again. ;D Either the game/app works or it doesn't.

Hello:
The " DirectX D3D test fails (test interrupted due to user key activation)" issue is from the notebooks keyboard drivers OneTouch. If you kill the onetouch process, the problem will disappear. but the extra program buttons (help, internet, email...etc) will not work until you reboot. I usually use the command "tskill onetouch" before DXDIAG tests, or gaming. In some cases, it may be another keyboard driver (QuickLaunch, or other Compaq / HP keyboard button driver), or in rare cases, related to your Antivirus program. Good luck, and take care. |
