Graphics issue installing x1600 drivers

I have an Acer Travelmate 8202 with a Mobility Radeon x1600, and have used Vista on it on and off since November 2006.

When I format to Vista I now use your great tool for converting the desktop drivers to the Mobility drivers and installing hem, only part of the way through the installation, my screen dimms quite a bit and becomes pretty dark. I can't seem to compensate for this without ruining the picture (Gamma, Contrast and Brightness all wash the screen out when approaching the brightness it was with the WDDM drivers)

Why is it doing that? Is there a way round it? Does anyone else with a Mobility x1600 suffering this same problem?
