Hi,
Recently I bought Acer Aspire 5720G with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2600. As you know Acer sells notebooks with OEM Vista, but I could survive only 3 days with it and then formatted HDD and installed WinXP. The original display driver from Acer VGA_ATI_v8.371.1.1WHQL-XP refused to install saying smth like "the program could not find driver compatible with current OS or hardware". So the only solution is this modder tool. However, still there are severe problems: there are plenty messages in ACEEventLog, I can't quit Windows - it hangs and while playing video files (any type) on any kind of player - video and audio streams often lag ![]() Acer suggests reinstolling Vista, is it really the only option?? I would be really very grateful for help. |

Unfortuneately, that laptop is built for vista.... the support for the components is quite lacking in xp...
While i highly suggest vista... i've yet to have a acer notebook with vista cause any grief or poor performance (acer is my main laptop that i sell).... If you absalutely need XP, have you tried downloading the ATI catalyst 7.12 drivers from ati's website (for the desktop), and then using the mobility modder from here to mod the driver and install it? (going by your post, it sounds like you used the modder on the acer supplied driver....)

I hate Vista, I really tried to get used to it, but failed. It's like coming to yr kitchen one day and finding spoons in the drayer, forks on the shelves, knives in the stove and you never find tea spoons; you can't manage yr friger any more - Vista knows the right settings better than you and finally each time you have to show yr id to microwave and enter the password!
Oh, yes, I tried both versions of 7.12 (as well as 7.11) - same result - even the movie titles don't scroll smoothly

it's unfortuneate that the only thing i can suggest is trying older versions of the drivers.....
they simply AREN'T making any laptops without vista.... vista is taking over as we speak..... it's getting more difficult to find a copy of xp every day.....specially on a new machine...

I guess the problem somehow is related with the unability of display driver to understand the power source - AC or battery - there is a message in eventlog:
GetPowerSourceMapping failed... And I've also noticed that sometimes problems disappear after reboot or sleep mode. It's all quite strange as the information about the battery status in the system tray is displayed correctly. |

personaly i use fire gl 8.44 drivers modified with rivatuner (moding hd2600 to work as firegl3600). direct3d is not working, but i don't need it as i work only in opengl mode. win xp works perfect exept i havent' found modem driver, and i dont need it as modems are obsolete like fdd
despite that i noticed that installing ati control panel i meet problems with power savings hibernating, standby etc. so i just manualy install ati drivers without control panel. btw i tried latest omega drivers, and still there is problems runing direct3d (tested on bmw m3 challenge game) Last edited by juodvarnis; Feb 25, 2008 at 11:26 PM. |
