Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Hey all, been reading these forums a bit as my laptop has a bit of a temper with any tweaking of sorts and finally have come across a problem I couldn't fix on my own.

Recently a mate of mine gave me some 'tips' on tweaking my ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 using ATI Tray Tools - needless to say I shouldn't have listened to him for an extra 10-20 fps, as I have previously discovered my laptop doesn't like this sort of thing (had major issues when trying to overclock the laptop over a year ago).

The end result was a game playing fine for about 3-4 minutes, and then suddenly the graphics card would begin disabling/re-enabling itself with a message along the lines of 'The R300 Device has failed and restarted' (not those words but something like it).

So I began trying to retrace my steps, uninstalling everything my mate told me to install. Now I'm currently at the stage where I've tried to use Mobility Modder to install the ATI 9.3 drivers about 5 times unsuccessfully - I've been around a bit on these forums and decided to take the approach:
- remove ATI.
- use driver cleaner to remove ATI.
- download DD and CCC separately & extract.
- run MM on DD.
- run DD, then CCC, then restart.

However, the Display Driver keeps failing to install:
Code:
Driver Install: the specified driver package was not installed for matching devices
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I know that once this is fixed I won't be installing any further drivers as someone told me the 9.4 and above drivers no longer support my card. And a good thing too, as I've spent a whole day trying to figure this bull**** out.

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Okay turns out many others have the same problem as me:

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/driverhe...ty-modder.html
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/driverhe...r-package.html

Seems this is a recurring issue, has anybody found a fix for this yet ? So far it seems to affect some people using Windows Vista 32 bit and Windows 7 Beta.

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

I might suggest to you to run Driver Cleaner and clean out all drivers and parts of drivers involved with your X1300 and then attempting a reinstall. If that fails you may have to reinstall the OS but lets not go there just yet

^ Cheers mate but I've already tried this, tried it again last night but to no avail. Tried to run it both whilst the graphics card was listed as the 'Standard VGA' card, then used Windows Update to update it to the incredibly old ATI Mobility X1300 driver and ran it again.

Failed both times. I'm going to try installing the XP version of 9.2 (filehippo keeps a large number of previous versions!) and see if that works. My laptop was XP when I got it.

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Had another friend tell me to try Omega but the author is still working on his Vista drivers, so that's a no-go till about June/July (if he gets it out by then).

EDIT
Okay I probably should've realised the XP drivers wouldn't work ... I'm going to try 9.2, 9.1 for Vista and if those don't work then I'm probably going to reinstall the OS or throw the damn laptop out the window.

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Why not try Dell's drivers for Vista for ATI's x1300 card, they won't need any mod and if they don't install then we can start from there, don't toss out window yet

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Link doesn't work shakeyplace. I'm going to try and find that download though, thanks for the idea.

Random question, you did read that I'm using a laptop, right? The reason for the mod was due to lack of OEM support for drivers of internal laptop components.

EDIT: I noticed that a new version of Mobility Modder was out, which supposedly Fixed problem in driver modification with the 9.2 and higher drivers. I attempted to install the 9.3 Catalyst drivers, and got the WHQL signature warning, which I believed meant the driver installed, but alas, it failed.

Re: Help for X1300 - Driver won't install

Huzzah!

I managed to get the 9.2 Catalyst Drivers working! I imagine it was either the Mobility Modder's 1.2 release, or Vista's SP2 release, or a combination of both!

In light of this, I'm not touching that driver *ever* again!
