Windows 7 and Radeon Mobility 9600 issue

I am looking for some help with the ATI mobility 9600 driver issue. I just installed Windows 7 (evaluation copy build 7100). Windows quickly identified the 9600 but ran standard VGA instead. I found this site while searching for a solution. I downloaded the latest modder application and Catalyst 9.3 (9_3_vista32_Win7_32_dd - driver only) from AMD's site. I followed the steps to install and the drivers successfully installed. However, upon rebooting, I checked the device manager and there is an error 43 on the ATI driver and it stopped the driver from working. Should I go to a lower Catalyst driver? The computer is an HP zx5190us. If I can get this and the AC97 sound driver working, then everything will be up to par. Any thoughts by the experts out there?

Re: Windows 7 and Radeon Mobility 9600 issue

I have the same 9600/9700 mobility card in my laptop, and have just managed to get Windows 7 with aero working by using the 9.3.1 legacy driver and the mobility modder:

ATI Catalyst? Legacy Display Driver

apparently this is the latest catalyst that will work with this GPU.

Unfortunately the driver does not solve this weird issue I have: when connecting an external display it shuts down the internal laptop display, and can no longer detect it, so no extended desktop for me :-( Apart from that, the driver seems to work fine.
