Vista catalyst puzzle

Upon purchasing a Toshiba laptop with a Radeon Mobility 3650 graphics card I attempted to update the drivers to the most recent one (9.6), considering the default is 8.6, but something is wrong.

When I try to install the driver from the 9.6 setup, (both the full package, and driver only one). It will not install the driver, or the CCC, and in the custom setup there isn't even an option to tick those two, (they don't even appear.)

I've tried doing it the normal way of uninstalling all ATI software via programs and features, (which only seems to remove the extras) and trying to install the driver, but it won't show up in the custom menu. Then I found that the ATI uninstall program doesn't even remove the driver from the computer, (realizing this after looking in the device manager after the uninstall, and confirmed after a reboot. Then I tried to uninstall it again and manually remove the driver with the device manager. I rebooted in safe mode, used driver sweeper, tried to install the catalyst there and it wouldn't allow it). So I booted in normal mode, denied Vista to automatically install it's own driver and attempted to do it again. The install window still won't come up with the option of installing the driver or CCC. As soon as I allowed Vista to install it's own driver it began installing 8.6.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas?

Re: Vista catalyst puzzle

Attempting to do this with an earlier release like 9.3 didn't work either.

The regular Cats won't work for laptops unless you modify them. You can get the application and info on how to use it here:

Re: Vista catalyst puzzle

The stock drivers installed without issue.

Wouldn't those drivers not work for me as I just have the Vista 64bit OS?

Re: Vista catalyst puzzle

Strange if you follow this link there are drivers for the Mobility Radeon HD3000 series under Win7 X64 but not Vista X64. That is probably why Chaos linked you to the Win7 drivers might be worth a shot to see if they solve your issue.

(So I am assuming the 9.6 Cats for Vista X64 don't support the Mobility Radeon HD3000 series)

Re: Vista catalyst puzzle

It seems like they do because it's running well and the CCC shows support for the 3650 Mobile graphics card.

Is there any realized benefits in installing the mobility driver over the stock driver if the stock works fine?
