Hi all,

this is my first post in this forum so be gentle if I break some forum rule or something.

I recently bought a Satellite L500-128 from Toshiba, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 in it. The laptop came with Vista 32 or 64 pre-installed (OEM) but for some reason that I wont discuss there I want to use XP. So I installrd XP, found all the required drivers so far except... the display drivers for XP. I tried the modder tool, but that didnt help: the setup said that there was no compatible device found or something like that. On the Toshiba website you can find drivers, but only for win Vista or Seven. Same thing on ATI website: XP support for this card seems to be missing.

Could anyone have a solution to my problem? As I said before, I want to use Win XP, NOT Vista NOR Seven. Is it a way to "trick" the XP Catalyst driver to make him think my card is actually supported? In fact, I do not care if all the functionnalities are not completely supported. I just want my card to work decently (that is, not in VGA mode!).

I tried installing the Vista drivers but with no success (missing an import in advapi32.dll if I remember correctly). Please, if anyone has a solution/suggestion, I will be very greatfull if you can give it.

I managed to make it work. If anyone is interested in the solution, I downloaded the ATI XP driver for the F50SL on ASUS website. This is an ASUS laptop also having a mobility HD4570. It refused to install (saying no compatible device was found), so I made the following changes in XP_INF\CX_71617.inf:
replace the line
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 " = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_90301B0A
by
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 " = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_FF801179

(to get the right SUBSYS number, you can go to the control panel in win XP, open device manager and go look under the "details" tab)

Looks like it's perfectly working (I tested some game and it was ok).

I downloaded the Asus driver for ATI and changed the XP .inf file to reflect the subsys. It actually worked. However, the monitor crashed once after about one to two hours. It went dark. You could tell there was light but it was black. After restarting, it was fine. Haven't seen any problem yet. I still have two devices without driver, both are base system device in the device manager panel. There are connected to PCI bus 4. Where did you find all your drivers?

I downloaded 2 or 3 drivers using TousLesDrivers.com - Téléchargement gratuit de mises à jour PC (drivers, bios, firmwares) (the site is in French and has some kind of activeX control that detects hardware and gives some links to get appropriate drivers). However, (see below) maybe that step was not necessary.

Then, I used the official Vista drivers on Toshiba website (search for your model number and download all of them, unless you know you already have them). Most of the provided Vista drivers are in fact XP-Compatible (not the display drivers). After extracting the archive (all drivers provided by Toshiba are packed in an autoextractible archive), do not run the provided tinstall.exe (as it requires Vista I think, and does not work under XP). Instead, use setup.exe (or whatever similar name). I guess tinstall.exe is some kind of toshiba installer that is mostly useless, just showing some kind of logo before launching the actual manufactor driver located in the same folder.

Here is the list of all drivers I used:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570
Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility
Intel Matrix Storage Manager
Intel PROWireless 3945-4965-5100-5300
Realtek Audio Driver
Realtek LAN Driver
TOSHIBA Web Camera Application

The other wlan drivers provided by Toshiba were useless (I have no Atheros wifi card).

If you have the same laptop model as me and install them you should have no unrecognized device anymore. The most important one is the Intel Chipset Utility (once you have installed it, you should not have any more device with no name). There also is the AHCI issue: if you are trying to install winXP and enable AHCI, the easiest way I found so far is as follows:
-disable AHCI in BIOS setup (replace "AHCI" with "Compatible")
-install XP
-install the intel Chipset utility
-reboot
-install the legacy driver for ICH9 M (launch "setup.exe -a" in a DOS prompt with the Intel Matrix storage manager setup program)
-update the driver in the harware control panel for ATA controllers/ICH9 Controllers 1 & 2 using the driver located in C:/Program Files/Intel/Intel Matrix Storage Manager/driver and choose your hardware in the list (for me, ICH9-M). You usually get a BSOD (Blue screen error + reboot) at that step when installing the driver for the second controller, but dont panic, that is not important
-Re-enable AHCI in BIOS setup
-Reboot (windows XP should hopefully start)
-Reboot again once all new hardware has been found :-)
-You can install Intel matrix Storage manager if you want (not required)

It appears that I have all the files you listed here. I initially streamslipped SATA driver into XP with nlite to install XP. Then I went to Intel site to download the chipset driver. Searched realtek for the wireless driver. The as you suggested used Asus driver for ATI chip. The intel website has a newer version of the chip driver. Maybe the older one will solve my issue but I am reluctant to switch to the old one. After checking everything was working fine, I used drivermax to generate a driver list and re-packaged the XP install. It came out with 81 drivers listed. The new package was then used for a direct XP install without any problem except the two base system device. They are still there. I believer we have the same model. So far everything seems to be fine though.

From a different forum.The two base system devices are Ricoh card reader. You are right, forman. I updated the touch pad driver with Vista driver and it worked fine.

Glad you managed to find the missing drivers. This laptop freaked me out at first after I buyed it because of its Vista/7-only policy. I was thinking about getting a refund, till I found out that it was possible to run it under XP :-)

This is the last time I buy an ATI product. I did it 10 years ago, and got the same kind of problems with buggy/uninstalable display drivers. To think that they did not manage to improve and still offer the same kind of lame vendor-based driver support than 10 years ago is just unforgivable...

What is the name of your laptop?

In any case, before following the instructions below, make sure you do have a Mobility Radeon HD 4570 in your latop. Otherwise, you may be unable to reboot and have to uninstall the driver in safe mode.

Open the "Device Manager" in "Control panel"->"System" and under the "Hardware" tab. Then, select your graphic card in the devices tree, double click and a property window should open displaying some info. Go under the "Details" tab, and you should see a list below with a single item displaying a serial number. Check that the VEN_xxxx, DEV_xxxx and SUBSYS_xxxx (which are part of this number) are the same as the ones I provided (for convenience, you can click on the number to select it, press Ctrl+C and it will be copied into the clipboard). If the numbers are different of mine, replace them in your CX_71617.inf file and try installing the driver again.

By the way, you might also have a problem with your keyboard driver, all your typing is in uppercase

My laptop is toshiba satellite L500D - 10R and i have also Mobility Radeon HD 4570. I did exactly as you guided me but unfortunately I still have problem. Full serial number is: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_FF801179&REV_00\4&277 0B40E&0&0010. Should I use full serial number to replace?

Mine is Satellite L500 - 128. I dont know what is the difference (if any).

Concerning the serial number, it seems to be ok (same as mine) so you dont have to make additional changes after what I described first.

How did you try to install the driver? Did you launch Setup.exe that is located two folders up with respect to CX_71617.inf?

By the way, what is the OS you are using currently? Is it XP 32 bits or 64 bits?

I don't think the new XP 32bit will recognize more than 4GB RAM. I will suggest 64bit XP. I have tried to do exactly what you did but XP professional 64bit. But there is no sound after I have loaded the driver for graphics(ATI mobility Readon P4650 driver with the same method you have tried) and HD audio device(realtek driver).

The graphic card work perfect. If I am succeeding in getting my laptop audio back I will update you. But it suckes my whole weekend to load the drivers and get the system working.

I installed XP 32 bits. It works pretty good so far (including the audio). You are right about the low RAM compatibility, though.

czechura: you are right, I mistyped my card name. That should not be an issue, though (but it might appear with a wrong name in the control panel because of that) since the name is just an "user firendly name" and not part of the driver core.

I am running out of ideas for solving your problem. If you give me an email address I will send you the version I'm using and that works for me.

Oh I forgot something. In fact, I dont remember precisely if I actually used the Setup.exe or if I used the built-in Windows support to install the driver. You might try that,czechura: again, go to the hardware tree in the control panel and right-click on the card. Select "properties", "driver" and try manually installing the driver. At some time you have to chose the "let me chose where the driver is" option (or something like that). At that time, provide the path of the driver (try the XP_INF location and if not working try the subfolder).

I removed useless parts of the original driver (64 bits version, for instance) and compressed it that's why it is so small. Go to the address I sent you and that should be ok.

Go to Toshiba website and download the Vista LAN drivers for your model. They are in fact XP-compatible and should work. Do not launch tinstall.exe (it wont work), instead use Setup.exe or any other similar name.

Could you explaine me accurately how can I do it because I tried many times to install drivers for lan (downloaded from toshiba website for my model- L500D-10R) and probably I'm doing something wrong.

Are you sure we are talking about LAN drivers (and not WLAN, I mean Wireless LAN)? The LAN drivers installation was pretty straightforward in my case. Just launch Setup.exe and it should be ok. If you are referring to wireless lan, then you have to use the Intel Pro Wireless driver I think.
