Sad X1250 on Windows 7 - atikmdag errors

Hi everyone,

I just bought a Dell Latitude XT (32-bit) and decided to reformat it with Windows 7. It has an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 card.

After reformatting, the "standard VGA adapter" driver made everything look like shit.

The first thing I tried was getting the Vista 32 drivers from Dell. This is the 8.551 version. Unfortunately, when I installed those drivers the computer started BSODing every time I tried to log in. The error was with atikmdag.sys with stop code 0x0000008e (0xc000005 ...).

After that I tried getting a new version off the ATI site. With the help of Mobility Modder, I was able to install Catalyst 9.3, which is the 8.591 version.

This actually worked for a while, but I've still been getting intermittent blue screens. These are sometimes on login and sometimes when I'm in the middle of something completely unrelated.

When I've tried doing later drivers (9.3, the latest I could get working, is from February 09) the setup always ends in cryptic errors or gives me a driver that just doesn't work.

What gets me is that I know getting this card to work on Windows 7 is possible, because the guy I bought it from had Win 7 running on it just fine.

Is there some newer driver I can install? Or, do you know any tricks for getting rid of the atikmdag.sys blue screen? This is driving me INSANE

Thanks in advance

Update: I can reproduce the error by removing the power cable. Every time I unplug (switching to battery), it blue screens.

It also occasionally just goes to this blank black screen I can't do much of anything with, with all the lights (hard drive, etc.) off.
