9700 is same as 9500??
My first post, sorry if this topic is already somewhere, I could not find it.
Problem: Amilo M1424, mobility radeon 9700SE. Original driver by Fujitsu, I tried to upgrade because I had problems interfacing with a new model of video projector. Well, what happens is that with each driver I try (be it ATI - modded drivers or omega drivers), the driver installs without particular problems (well, almost), but the graphic card appears always as 9500, not 9700. I am not an expert, but maybe because of this "transormation" I cannot find resolutions better than 1280x800, provided instead by the old original driver. Is this normal? I mean, 9700 and 9500 are basically the same? Thank you. pls forgive my english, I am connnecting from Italy. Roberto |

just had 4 operating rendering pipelines, and 4 disabled ones while the 9700s had 8. There's a lot more to this, as I don't think it serves the purpose of this thread and it really doesn't matter. If you want to set more resolution modes you can check how to inside the inf file that comes with your drivers. You could also use http://entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm or something similar for the task, but make certain it's a resolution and refresh rate your screen supports. Good luck with that. |

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
The Mobility Radeon 9700 is based on the desktop 9600 XT (RV360 chip), so has 4 pipeline. It's strange that it'd be recognised as 9500 and not 9600 XT.

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
It sounds like the hardware ID of the 9700SE is the same for the 9500 series. So that's why the card shows up as 9500. So the issue is just in the .inf files that has the hardware ID's on it. So dont worry the driver hasn't changed the hardware you have just misidentification of the card.

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
Thanks Iplayer, but I don't think I understood the answer (I am not an expert, as I said). What I was wondering is why loading a different driver transforms a 9700 into a 9500, probably witt the related "limitations". With the old original driver, the board remains a 9700, and allows resolutions up to 1600x1200 on my screen. With these other drivers, that are said to be compatible with 9500 AND 9700 series, the resolution is limted to 1280X800; not that I am overinterested in higher resolutions, but probabbly the 9500 is "less advanced" than 9700 also in other respects. But I may be wriong. Thanks anyway

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
Yes, that may be the answer (strange though, same "error" in ATI drivers AND Omega??). But how come the available resolutions are much less than before (up to 1280x800 vs. 1600x1200 with the old driver)?

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
It might be listing only the supported resolutions by your screen, if not you can add them manually anyways - I explained above.

Did you try older ATI or Omega drivers?

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
Yes, I did, but the results were always the same. At the momentt I am running with Omega 4.8.442, and this driver (the card is always seen as 9500) seems to provide resolutions up to 2560x1600 (!). Unfortunately, resolutions higher than 1280x800 result in oversize display (display exceeds screen dimensions), whereas with the old driver these resolutions were correctly displayed on the screen. I saw a topic in the faq in the omega driver site, addressing this problem ("why my windows desktop goes into panning mode...") but in the suggested solution:
1) I can't find the "monitor attributes", "use ddc information" 2) The only place where I find this ddc stuff is using ATI tray tools, display settings, where I see the panel attached. As you can see, "No DDC!" is displayed in red, and in the panel opened selecting DDC it seems that the display limits are already overridden, and in any case DDC option is greyed out. But it does not work. I don't want to sound too fussy, but I am afraid I have too much confusion in my pc and in my head. Thanks... Roberto |

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
Laptops often do that when you choose a resolution higher than it can support. 1280x800 appears to be the highest you can have on screen.
PS: I just confirmed that's the max resolution you can have with your laptop. Last edited by iPlayer; Dec 15, 2009 at 10:29 AM. |

Re: 9700 is same as 9500??
hello iPlayer,
as I said, I am not overinterested in higher resolution issues, but: 1) the booklet of the technical specs of my amilo clearly indicates for the display a "maximum supported resolution" of 1600x1200; 2) I have a terrible memory, but I remember that when I had problems with the external projector I installed a "modded" driver that allowed to change the resolution higher than 1280X800 without panning, and the Catalyst CC , in the tab related to "display properties" had a check box "use ddc":I don't remember the exact wording, but it was there, I am sure because the only way to have the laptop work with the damn new projector was to NOT use ddc). I can't remember the version of the driver, afterwards I had to rebuild completely the disk because of a crash and maybe I used different versions of the driver, but from that moment on I keep getting 9500 instead of 9700, reference to ddc disappeared and resolution stops at 1280x800. It really does not matter that much, the display works fine: it is only a question of understanding what is going on; thanks a lot for yor patience. Roberto |
