exclamation ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Hello,

Fisrt of all, excuse me for my english, but i am not fluent... I am french.

I have a laptop Compaq X1006ea, with Windows XP PRO SP3, MSXML6, .net Framework 2.0,3.0,3.5, all up-to-date, and a graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon 9200.

I would like to upgrade the driver of my graphic card in order to be able to install a software which require Opengl 1.4.

I have to say : when I install and use the last version of driver provided by HP, called SP28077, with the version of driver 6.14.10.6451 of 05/15/2004, catalyst 4.6... everything works fine... but i have only Opengl 1.3!!! That means that my graphic card seems working in good condition.

I tryied a lot of solutions you propose in this forum but no one works...

I have unistall the old driver by add/remove program.
I have ran the DH driver cleaner program you propose to be sure to install correctly the old driver.
I have download severals drivers from your website and from AMD web site.
Catalyst version 6.12, 6.11, 6.5...
I have updated the differentes ATI/Support directories with the last version of DH Mobility Modder.net with no problem.
Let me explain the symptom....
First, for each version, i have tryied to install the ati driver by Setup.exe. Everything looks fine, but when a restart my computer, just after the Windows XP Pro screen, i have a black screen...
The one solution i have is to shut down the compter with the power button (5 seconds), restart the compter in safe mode and uninstall the driver.
I have tryied to restart the computer in VGA mode to install the driver...
Second, for each version, I have tryied to update the driver by hardware manager, everithing looks fine, but a the end of the installation, i have a black screen... same symptom, same procedure to correct this situation.

Do you have an idea ?

maybe there is a problem with DH Mobility Modder.net ???

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Regards,

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Could be it's trying to display at an unsupported mode.
Maybe you can do adjustments loading windows with the drivers but at a low resolution, instead of using the safe mode ones. I don't know if your windows has that option.
Then disable extended display identification, change the resolutions and refresh rates to what your screen can support.

Re : ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

The problem is if I try to restart the computer normally or in the VGA mode, I have a black screen juste after the Microsoft Windows XP boot screen.
The one way I have to be able to display a screen is to reboot in safe mode.
I agree with you, it could be an initial resolution unsupported...
But I dont know how to ask windows to restart with the driver with a different resolution (1280 x 800 for exemple). I have cheked MSconfig.exe, but i have'nt seen an option...
What do you means by "disable extended display identification". Could you say me how to do that.
Thanks a lot for your help.

mradriverheaven
PS : I have tried to plug-in an external screen (17"), and It displays the loggin screen at a very low resolution...

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Oh, you have another screen. That makes things easier. Why not adjust the values for your laptop's screen like that?
The Extended Display Identification Data should be in the driver's options, this option is evidently failing to detect your display's limits properly.

Re : ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Unfortunately, if I loggin with the external screen ( 17 "plug-in on the laptop), in the Catalyst parameters, my laptop's screen is not recognized, only the external screen as the main screen. So, I can't change the extended Display Identification Data for the laptop's screen... Only for the external screen... but it is not what we want to do !
after severals tests, the one lastest driver of DH wich works with ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 on HP's X1000 series of laptop seems to be Catalyst 5.6...
But I don't know why...
Another Idea ?
Thanks a lot for your help

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

An easy way to do it would be by using a program like Power Strip(shareware program), which you won't need anymore once you got it solved.

If that doesn't work, I found this at their support site:

737-370: Troubleshooting Common DVI Flat Panel Display Issues

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Try this, the last post is a solution to a very similar problem I had. It might be worth a look because it seems you are having the same driver issue with an updated version of windows.

ATi don't support this card type anymore so the drivers are way outdated now.

Take a look here, last post..
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/mobility-radeon-drivers-support/193242-mobility-radeon-9200-issue-please-help.html

(Highlight this link and copy it in your address bar, otherwise it will just direct you the entire forums)

Definitely worth a try, just make sure you remove your previous drivers before following this.

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

I suggested something similar in my first post, although without reinstalling drivers.
That's a more thorough guide though :O

Re: ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Thanks, I personalized the guide but it's generally what another user said on the forum. Credit is given in my post, it's simply the drivers. ATi do not support the card, so no updated drivers. Therefore modding current ones to adapt to the 9200 is a nice plan. Worked for me at least.

He did the inf mod already before posting. But when it comes to laptop drivers support falls upon the assemblers.
I think it's mostly the display detection part that's failing for all these black screen cases on laptops.
Sure hope that solves it!

I'm just terrible at expressing myself in general; I couldn't put it out as eloquently with the language barrier and me omitting stuff in general.

Re : ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 - Black Screen

Hello,
Thanks so much everybody for the time you spent on my problem...
I have tried many times all solutions you propose.
Unfortunately, I think there is no way to solve it...
This problem seems to be specific to HP and Compaq X1000 series laptop... Severals topics relate that.
The one solution I have is to install the version 5.6 of Catalyst wich works.
Thanks again.
Regards.

Hm, sorry to see no real solution was found for your problem. Maybe it's just 'one of them things'. Well I hope you have no further hardware issues all the same.
