cannot install ati driver on laptop

I recently purchased Doom 3, and upon running it on the recommended settings(high), it would crash to windows at random. A friend told me to get a new display driver, since mine was from 2003, so I downloaded Catalyst 5.3 from ATI. I used the uninstall program from ATI to get rid of my old driver, but the new one will not install. None of the ATI drivers will. It gives me the following errors:
1. INF error; Video driver not found
2. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA Driver before running setup.

I have no idea what the problem is, and now I have no display driver whatsoever. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer specs are:
Cyberpowerinc. gaming Laptop
Intel P4 3.4 Ghz, Intel 865 chipset
Ati mobility radeon 9700 DDR 256MB
17" screen

you need mobility modder, or even better and easier use omegas drivers which will work on laptops...

make sure you use driver cleaner aswell
