artifacts after installing latest catalyst

Hi there, I just installed the latest catalyst in my laptop using the DH mod tool and got screen artifacts in windows applications like firefox. Was previously using the drivers that came with the laptop. In areas that are supposed to be transparent, they appear black or pinkish, which is similiar to extracting transparent icons to a format that doesn't support transparency. My laptop specs:

NEC Versa E6000
P-M 1.6G
Mobility 9100 IGP
512MB ram
WinXp home with sp2

installed catalyst with this file: wxp-w2k-catalyst-ccc-8-121-050322a-022141c-english.exe from ati

latest atitool is also installed, though no overclocking is done.

I hope I didn't leave out anything needed to diagnose the problem. thanks.

Hi tkc, that problem is new to me. Is it possible with Atitool to underclock? ifso, are you still getting artifacts?

i've attached the above screenshots to show you what i mean. The left image is not supposed to appear pinkish. As for the one on the right, the scrollbar background is supposed to be grey and for the tabs, u can see extra black lines that are not suppoed to be there.

I've tried using atitool and the artifacts still remain. Running on battery mode(powerplay on) or using the mains(powerplay off) doesn't make a difference either. Btw, the drivers lag my comp quite a bit and makes it quite hard to even surf this forum.

I chose Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP in the DH tool, although I think it doesn't affect the installation, but is that the correct choice? thanks

just a test, I see u are using some kind of skinning application (with a nice Mac theme)
Try disabling all of them and see if the default MS skin (yeah it's ugly) works fine.

Not that I don't want to try that, but I really prefer to use windows looking like that. Even if it works properly, although I doubt it, it makes no difference since I'm going to activate skinning again via StyleXP. I'm suspecting driver incompatability because the 3d view of atitool pauses every 10 secs or so, which doesn't happen with my old drivers. I also realise that it tells me the driver is not certified by MS, although this isn't really a problem. I just installed catalyst 5.3 and it's worse, bringing me to a 4-bit desktop, forcing me to rollback the drivers immediately. I may try the older catalyst 4.12 drivers later.

just as i suspected, i installed the catalyst 4.12 drivers w/o a problem. my original drivers were even older than that, ver 4.1 as far as i can tell. i'm not sure what changed between the newer and older versions to cause this problem.

well it might be that direct3d was not enabled, if you install a newer set, run dxdiag.exe and watch the display tab. either that or AGP is not working someway.
