Total Newbie Question.
Ok, here's my situation. I downloaded the Radeon Omega Drivers 2.6.25a (Catalyst 5.4) last week. I don't know if they're working, or really, for that matter, how to adjust them. All I did was download and install them. I've read a lot of the postings here, and see mention of "driver cleaning" and such, none of which I was promted to do during or after the download. I do know that after the download, I did the radlinker to my BF1943 game with the Desert Final mod, and then re-set the numbers from the standard 310.50 Core/195.75 Memory, to the "sync" setting of 310.50 Core/310.50 Memory. When I played the game, it did look like the graphics were slightly quicker and more stable, albeit a little more speckled, but from reading here on this site, I can't really tell if it's changed at all.
Here's all my system info: GFX MODEL: Mobility Radeon 9600-64Mb Dedicated LAPTOP MAKE and MODEL: HP Pavilion zx5190us GFX CLOCK SPEEDS: 310.50 Core / 195.75 RAM CPU: 3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 8 kilobyte primary memory cache 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache MEMORY: 1024 Megabytes Installed Memory Slot 'U5' has 512 MB Slot 'U6' has 512 MB HARD DRIVE: TOSHIBA MK8025GAS [Hard drive] (80.03 GB) SCREEN RESOLUTION: 1280X800 The only games I play are BF1942 (Desert Final Mod), Midnight Club 2, Madden Football, EA's Baseball and Golf games, and the occassional Yahoo pool. I know I'm not really putting my system under any serious loads playing these games. I only got the drivers because I was having some heat/choppiness/error issues with MidnightClub a while back, and the HP cust. service recommended me to Omega's site because of HP not giving any decent driver support for the ATI gfx. Hopefully someone can offer me some guidance in this issue. Thanks in advance. Kevin |

it would have been better to uninstall the origonals and clean them using the drivercleaner, but if they are working fine then there is no need to fuss

noooooo if his memory runs 195mhz at stock and he's setting it to run at 310.5 then that's a 100+mhz overclock.. i'm surprised it runs at all your video card must have very good memory chips or cooling system. i would imagine the speckling you see is being caused by artifacts, probably from the excessive heat your videocard is generating.
don't run the core and memory synched, it doesn't give you much if any performance yield. plus the overclockability of the vpu and vram will vary so by synching them you will be limiting your maximum overclock to the weaker component, probably the ram. start again from default and try increasing them slowly by about 5mhz and testing some games to see if its stable or artifacting. |

I tried the one test that everyone here seems to take to benchmark their video..needless to say, my laptop fell sorely short. Once I sync'd the overclocking, it looked miserable, and blue-screened shortly thereafter. I've re-set the settings in the radlinks i've made back to the original default. I'm going to try doing them like you said, small increments, until it get's better or unstable. Does anyone on forum have a laptop with specs like mine? If so, what are the settings you're running??
Thanks Kevin |

Stock GPU Core for the MR 9600 is normally 300-350mhz, while the memory is normally 300-350mhz (or 600mhz-700mz DDR). Some manufacturers will underclock certain settings to create less heat (most times due to where they have other parts located near it). The only problem with overclocking both is that the memory resides on the same chip that the GPU does (infact it's on the backside), so you would essentially be creating a lot of centeralized heat on and around the GPU. My advice would be to not clock either one past 350mhz which is the max tolerance of the chip.
BTW: While the best procedure is to uninstall, then clean out the old drivers it's not always necessary. It will give you the best 'base' to install new drivers as you are reducing the potential for creating problems/conflicts due to old drivers. However, you don't need to do it all the time. The tweaks Omega does to the drivers are not driver specific, but rather settings specific. So, you are essentially getting the newer drivers, but with Omegas registry settings and tweaks. It is a good idea, though, to clean up the old drivers every now and then, but again, not always necessary. -Tip |

DONT try and match this with yours. If you do it will turn into a molten slag before you get there

You have a x800xt PE in a kt133a mobo?
No, it's a fact since he will need to overclock that P4 to get up to the same strength as a sonoma at 2.32ghz with a FSB of 154.8 (super Pi = 34 seconds) add that extra heat to the heat of gfx and your asking for trouble. Oh and that score is the highest for a mobility x600 out there, it would actually sit on the front page for the desktop version too (and 9600).

yup. i have this crappy desktop and HL2 friggin comes out like a month before i get my laptop so i said to myself i'm going to ENJOY this game so i ran out and bought an X800 to play hl2 with until my lappy arrived. ffs. i didn't even get to the hoverboat with it...
and no, of course waiting wasn't an option. if i want to play catchup what would be the best way to do it? what has the most important effect in 3dm01? i have a pm2.0 mr9700 128mb 1024mb ddr400... low timings or high fsb? |

You have timing control on your notebook? If you do I would treat it like an A64, if not as high as the fsb can go really, though you will need a clockgen. At 600/315 CPU has a large impact on performance but at this level of gfx both CPU and GPU speed are about equally important. But remember those temperatures! I can monitor HDD, CPU, GPU and GPU MEM.

i have a clockgen and a timing tweaker.. i only get temps off the hdd... =\
do you run in to sound problems with your agp/pci bus running so high? Last edited by thegave; Jun 2, 2005 at 07:29 PM. |

Not that I have noticed though I usually mute the sound. What program do you use to adjust timings?
