3dmark2001se - 9000 mobility

I have the following laptop:-

Amilo pro 7010
768mb memory
40gig hard drive
ati 9000 with 128mb shared memory

I've tried 3dmark 2001 se which got only "2400"

I've made sure there are no other background programs running and have installed the latest omega drivers wich get the same results.

I'm sure I should be getting more than this although I know the laptop isn't designed for 3d graphics.

Should I be getting more? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Just thought I'd check the dxdiagnostics.

direct draw seems to work although for some reason it slows down every now and again.

When I click test Direct3d though something strange happens.

Before each test can start it says "You have interupted the test by pressing a key" and then it moves to next test where it says the same thing and so on.

Any ideas?

Might be 200 points low. Looking at the orb the dedicated cards get 8000-9000 then there is a HUGE gulf to 2800 as the highest score which I think is the shared mem cards. Sorry but a mobility 9000 with SHARED gfx mem is not for games, at least not modern ones.

So it might be about right?

That's cool if it is. I'm not going to be using it for games anyway. Just was worried something was actually wrong with the card or something.

Thanks

Hi.

Just been looking on the orb (good idea by the way) and it looks like mine is scoring way lower than others using my card.

Did you look at 2001 or 2003? It's 2001 it's 2001 I'm getting those rubbish scores in.

Here's an example of one:-

User: nhaynes@btinternet.comRes: 1024x768 32bitOS: Microsoft Windows XPDate: 2005-1-10CPU: Intel Celeron 1698 MHzGPU: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000

That cpu is 1ghz slower than mine but scores well over double using exactly the same card.

A lot I saw were scoring triple what I was getting with similar setups.

Any ideas?

Sorry just realised you were reffering to those with shared memory.

Ahh well.

My radeon 8500 which is stronger than the 9000 pro desktop card gets 1801 heavily overclocked in 3dmark 03 there is NO WAY he got 2000 in 3dmark 03 with that card. He's either misread or lying. The highest score in 03 on the orb with the 9000 is 1400. He might have a 9600pro/9500

The laptop I shoudl add is brand new out of the box. all i've done is remove the standard drivers for the card and tried both teh latest omega drivers plus the 4.12's.

Direct x seems fine.

I've also ended all useless tasks in task manager. I'm out of ideas.

Thanks

zion he has a celeron... you have a p4. huge performance difference even ignoring the clockspeed difference.

Busbyuk,
Your score is about right. I had a very similar notebook and did quite a bit of research trying to improve its video performance, but found that the Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP really does have an upper limit of around 3500 points in 3dMark2001 and around 500 in 3dMark2003. CPU isn't a huge factor here, as the video card is what is limiting you.
I found that I was able to get a moderate increase (from around 2600 to 3500 points in 3dMark2001) by:
(1) Installing the latest Omega drivers (performance was maximized for me by the 4.12 version, if I remember correctly).
(2) Going to the ATI website and installing the latest GART and South Bridge drivers (I'm not sure which of the two did the trick). Just look under drivers and then select "Motherboards with ATI Graphics", since your graphics are integrated onto your motherboard.
Rest assured (or alternatively, be disappointed) that your video card is indeed working correctly.
Cheers

Right you have misread you said 3dmark 03 thats very different to the 3dmark 2k1 you actually got that score in. The radeon 8500 has faster memory and 2 texture units per pipeline rather than the 9000's 1. Its one of ATIs more shadier names the 8500LE (light edition) with a lower core and memory clock was renamed 9100 later on. You got 1950 in 3dmark 2k1 and thats less than him.

That review is of a 9000 with dedicated memory, it makes a VERY big difference which to prove my point you have forced me to go into.

Dedicated ram is clocked higher than system ram and is on separate chips with a dedicated link the gfx core giving it it's own separate bandwidth which is more than system ram anyway. Having the GFX as in your case dip into system ram means that some of the bandwidth that the CPU and other devices could be using is swolowed up hurting performance. Also if you have 256mb of ram and a 128mb shared gfx card then half is taken by the gfx and the system itself has effectively 128mb, more ram helps ofc but it still has an effect. You also have the effect of the total bandwidth being less than normal dedicated ram anyway and the system ram being slower.

All in all having shared ram REALLY hurts performance and in games at least even moderatly newer ones dedicated ram is the way to go. Of course technologies like turbo cache and PCI express help but your laptops have none of these. They just plain suck at newer games. Happy now?

Feel free to waste your time trying to beat the following scores:
2k1:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7849219

03:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=2086702

You will fail miserably.

Oh and for refernce this is the highest score ever for a 9000pro DESKTOP CARD (ie better than mobility for OCing) :

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3970621

1598, your claim of beating this with a lower system is actually quite funny.

I don't think my scores are too bad considering that I'm using shared memory with the graphic card @ 128mb.
