Radeon in Iraq
I bought a new Alienware laptop about 2 months ago and had it shipped to Iraq where I am currently deployed in the Army. I have a radeon mobilitly 9600/9700 pro and I am having serious problems. None of my games work. Rome: Total War, Far Cry, Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory, or Brothers in Arms. They all start up but almost immediately I get these strange lines and shapes in the game. Like in Rome Total War when I get to the first Battle sequence there are triangles appearing and the spears my spearmen are carrying go all the way up to the sky. Wierd stuff like that. I don't have very good access to the internet and even less time so its been hard getting drivers and trying to get this fixed. I tried installing the newest ATI drivers but after I install them the date doesn't change. I uninstalled everything first and it still didnt work. Eventually I was able to download the Omega drivers and they installed ok. Unfortunately my problem continues. I don't know what to do anymore. Please help. Its depressing as hell being over here with this supposedly awesome computer that doesn't even work for me. Not to mention the fact that I paid $3000 for something that doesnt work. Thanks for your help in advance.

It may be that the chip is dead, if possible return it for a refund and get a better laptop, if you need a portable computer than the IDIOTIC knee jerk reaction above then ask for help before ordering.

Knee jerk? Idiotic... Fine you help him... I just thought that screenies would help instead of going to the extreme and saying his chip is dead but hell, you are intelligent, I'm dumb and you know all and call me an idiot.

Try useing driver cleaner 1st, rebooting, then installing the drivers like omega's.
You could try the mobilty mod tool on a set of officals, there are other moded sets too. Might be a hardware issue that requires factory repair. Post some screen shots. image hosting www.imageshack.us free screen print program http://www.download.com/Screen-Print...ml?tag=lst-0-3

. I would be aiming at a 2.95kg machine with an x700 128mb with a 4.5 hour battery life but HEY if you want a KNEE JERK REACTION to that first heavy machine, which is what it is without knowing more about his current machine, then fine go ahead.

Well he says he wants to run games and Dell XPS or any other dell would have been cheaper, more robust and simply a better deal... I mean, he gives a list of games, I assume he wants gaming capabilities...
600 grammes of difference is not much you know... Not much at all... And do you know more about his machine and his uses? How can you give him the perfect laptop when you don't even know what he uses it for... Anyways, use drivercleaner, reinstall drivers. If no go, try to get the alienware helpdesk on line! |

The Acer travelmate 8104 can still play games, weighs over 600 grams less (over 20% of its weight) and has 3 hours more battery life (triple that of the Dell) which is where the main difference lies.
