Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP AGP - Battlefield problems
Hi everyone - This is my first post. Sorry to start on a negative note, but I could use some help.
First off: System Specs Toshiba A75-S209 Laptop 1.5GB Memory ATI Radeon 9000 IGP AGP Video (64MB Default - uses system memory) I configed this to 128MB when I got the computer and can't change it back now ATI Chipset Realtek AC97 Audio Everything was working well... I've been playing Battlefield Vietnam and 1942 on it regularly with no real problems. Original drivers, and DirectX 8. Every once in a while it slows way down, and the computer's fan kicks in as CPU usage skyrockets, and then a few seconds later it runs well again. This wasn't a problem for me. I bought Battlefield 2 the day it came out... and I figured I could at least play it on the very minimum settings (Specs say Radeon 8500+). It wouldn't work at all until I installed Modded Catalyst 5.6 drivers. Framerate was <= 15.0 FPS as per BF2's renderer.showfps 1 option. I can turn the settings all the way down or all the way up with almost no change in framerate. It's always bad. I tried running Battlefield Vietnam again after all this and now it too has horrible framerates regardless how low you set display settings. What happened? I can't turn down my AGP Bus speed to 4X because the BIOS has no option for it and SmartGart wont work at all on my computer. I also have no way of adjusting fastwrite. I'm trying to avoid wiping the whole computer and reinstalling the factory installation just so I can play BFV again. Nevermid BF2. I can do without that for now. I was going to come on here and ask how to get BF2 working, but now my main concern is getting BFV back to it's old self again. What do you think? |

I think you started using computer yet.......Everything you talked about is easy to do with some programs and settings..... :-).First you can revert your UMA memory size from your BIOS , but i think you don't want...because lowering it can cause slowdowns in games.....Also you can enable fastwrite by Ati tray tools. You are too brave to play Battlefield 2 with this card(Also i've that). Why do you want to lower everthing you see?,,Graphic memory , AGP port.....lowering this settings won't provide you performance increase....despite thay cause problems and slowness.Omega drivers are far away better than factory drivers,if you can use right settings. Also you can download ATI GART drivers from ati's official site.

Aligokalppeker,
Actually, all the things I want to do are disabled for some reason. The memory size is NOT available in BIOS. My BIOS is a piece of crap... the only settings available in it are very basic settings like date/time and boot order. It's a Phoenix BIOS. The only reason I wanted to try lowering it was because it's one of the only things I haven't tried yet. Originally there was a tab under display properties with 64MB and 128MB options available, but it is now gone after installing the new catalyst drivers. About SmartGart... I have the Gart drivers. But for some reason I am unable to get the Smartgart tab to appear under advanced display properties. Running ATIPRBXX.EXE /g doesn't do anything either. The hard drive crunches for a while but nothing ever appears. I do realize that there are supposed to be methods for adjusting these items, I just can't figure out how to trick them into appearing. |

I've got a Gateway laptop with the same video card and have been having problems with running BF2. My card is currently set to 64MB of video memory, and I can't seem to change it. Any idea how I can increase it to 128MB? I can't change it in my BIOS settigs or in my display properties. Do I need to flash my BIOS? If so, where could I get one? (Gateway doesn't have a new one that helps).
Thanks, Greg |

Greg, If you want I can send you my Toshiba drivers for the Radeon 9000 IGP. They enable a tab in display settings and make it possible to adjust UMA to 128MB. Don't know if they'll work with your laptop but you can give it a try.
Just to let you know, BF2 may not run well at any memory setting. I tried every possible configuration over a span of a week to get BF2 to work with no luck. I think it has to do with the fact that the IGP shared memory is being accessed by the video card and by the system for retrieving the level. It runs okay for a little bit but then suddenly the workload skyrockets and the game just about stops. In the game you can hit the '~' key to get the console up, then type "renderer.drawfps 1" to display the framerate in the upper left hand corner of the screen. The game displays all framerates below 15.0 FPS as 15.0 FPS. Guess they don't want you to know what it really is! Anyway, mine was bottomed out the entire time. No combination of low settings could fix this. Looking up into the sky will get you great framrates but that's about it. If you find a fix for this please let me know! You can configure it from your bios.....I don'y know exact menu location but toshiba's bios menus are too simple that you can easily find it.....

Help as well
I couldn't find anywhere in my BIOS where to change my UMA from 64MB to 128MB (PheanixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1). Anyone know where I could change it incase I somehow skipped over it? Or if not, want to send your drivers this way (actually please send the drivers even if I find it in the BIOS please). I would be VERY thankful to you if you did ^^.
EDIT:: Here are my specs: Toshiba A70-RX1 CPU: P4 3.2Ghz w/HT Ram: 512MB (soon to be 1024, but it is also less than 512 due to the shared memory of video card) GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP AGP 64MB (but I used to be able to change it from 16 to 128, but ever since I installed Omega I haven't been able to) HDD: 100GB 4200RPM Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2 Anything else really matter? Well if you need more info jsut say. Oh, and for the drivers to send, via AIM? E-mail? MSN? Please and thanks ^^. Last edited by Bry113; Nov 28, 2005 at 05:25 AM. |

As for the guys with the inability to access the memory change, you might need to reinstall the chipset/mainboard drivers - but I looked at Toshiba and they are not available for some as a download - might find them on your system CD in that case...

Yeah they were with my default drivers, but they vanished once I downloaded Omega drivers . And the problem with my CD is that in order for me to get my old drivers back, I may need to reformat? I am not 100% sure, but from what I have seen I think that's the story ; ;.Like I said in my earlier post, anyone up for sending me thair drivers?
