CPU could be bogged down. The stress test only tests graphics not cpu load.

I hardly have anything running in the background, i even turn off my antivirus. And since i just reformated i hardly have anything else installed. Could it be defective RAM then?

No, I have defective RAM, and I know what it's like, it's not that. You will randomly freeze if you have stock FSB , unless that's happening then your RAM should be fine.

Steam does do that, it's incredibly ineffecient, don't worry about it though, for what you lose to steam you gain back with the source engine, which is I would say the most effecient game engine to date.

ok, well it looks like I will try to convince dell to send me a new card. In all the 9800 reviews they say it preforms 50% better then any other mobility card, i should get as much FPS as you 9700 guys shouldnt i?

Does your computer support CPU throttling? Are you running on battery when you play? With my laptop config (see below) and zer0point 5.6 drivers I get 70 ish frames on a LAN server with bots and 30-50 internet server at 1280x800 with midrange settings and 2x AA

trottling only comes into effect when your not plugged in

which processor do you have?

This is a possibility. How's the heat on your keypad when you're playing the game? I could be wrong, but your vents on the back, as well as your heatsink fins, could be plugged up. If it's a yr. old, and you haven't cleaned it too often, then that could be doing it. I was having the same problem with BF1942(Desert Final Mod) and omega drivers, at about the 1 yr. mark. I removed the back panel, cleaned out about a pound of crud, and installed the latest drivers. Now, it runs it fine. I'm even getting from 40 to 80 FPS on BF2 servers. Mind you, I'm also running on low and medium settings, due to a crappy ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 64mb(128 shared) card. Luckily, I've got a gig of Ram to help it out.
Good Luck
Kev

That is what my comment about CPU throttling was for. If your computer is overheating it will underclock your card to cool down. Do what br00k suggested and blow your laptop out maybe?

OMG!! that was the problem! you guys rock. There was a thick film of dust covering both vents, i could peel it off in one big chunk lol. My computer is working 100% better now, got 114fps average with everything on high, lowest my fps will drop is 40 on assault. Thanks everyone!

Good deal, Tristar. Glad to hear it worked out for you. I'm running a coolpad with my lappy, as well as cleaning it about every other week now. Usually, it doesn't go over 68 degrees celcius (IF mobilmeter is actually reading it correctly) during heavy gaming. I cleaned it last night, and while playing today I couldn't feel any heat at all on my keyboard, so as it seems, it makes ALL the difference in mobile gaming! =o) Again, congrats on fixing your prob....

I found Mobmeter online somewhere. It's a free program, so I'd google it. As for the cool pad, I bought mine at Fry's Electronics for about 30 bucks. I would think any large chain electronics store should have them, though. It seems to make a big difference in the heat of the GPU and keypad. I wish someone would make an actual refrigerated one. I can imagine how this thing would zoom if it was getting 35 degree air shoved up it's butt!!! LOL
