Need Help with the ati mobility 9700

I am having trouble running games on my laptop, that shouldn't be a problem. For whatever reason, while playing games such as Rome: Total War, Age of Mythology, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2, my graphics will crash. I.E. my screen will become all pixelated, you can see all the wireframing, and then everything hardlocks and my screen goes black. mind you, that when the screen goes black, my laptop is still running. lights still on, fans still going. I have the mobility radeon 9700, an athlon 64 3200 processor, and over a gig of memory so power isn't a problem. I thought it was overheating, but it even does it when cool air is blowing out the ducts. I tried to install half life via steam, but it said that i needed to update my drivers, could that be the problem? Also when i tried to update the driver with the mobility catalyst 5.9 driver from ati, the driver wouldn't install because it couldn't find the driver that i have. any suggestions/ideas? i'm completely out of ideas.
