Sad Driver detects 9700SE as 9500

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M1424 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700SE with 128MB, but every time I install the omegadrivers or the original ATI drivers after I modded them, my card gets detected as a mobility 9500.

Can someone help me with this problem?

First up, welcome to the forums.

The problem lies with the Device ID of the chip. The Mobility 9600/9700 have 2 Device IDs assigned to it (4E50, and 4E52). The problem is that the Mobility 9500 shares one of the IDs too, and Windows XP has choosen to install the drivers using the first card on the list that has that ID (specifically, ati2mtag_M10, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E52). There are 2 ways to correct this:

1) Go into the C:\ATI\SUPPORT\5-10_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_27256 (or whatever driver you have installed)\Driver\2KXP_INF folder, and open up the file called CX_27256.inf with a text editor (notepad should do fine). In there look for a listing "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9500" = ati2mtag_M10, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E52 , and delete it. Save the file, and rerun the installer in the folder that holds the driver (whatever folder off of C:\ATI\SUPPORT).

2) You can manually update your driver, and choose to install it as a Mobility 9600/9700.

In any case it should be fine as is. Whether it perceives it as an M9500 or M9700 shouldn't effect the use of the driver. In fact, in both cases it's using the exact same driver since both chips use the same ID. There shouldn't be any performance or functionality difference.

BTW: I know that this isn't related, but I thought I'd mention it seeing as you have that particular laptop. Back in June '05 Fujitsu issued a recall on a list of AMILO (and Lifebook) notebook batteries including the one in your specific notebook. You can get a look at the list HERE. What you do is check out the battery pack serial number, and if it ends with a G1L1 you should talk with Fujitsu about replacing it as they were known to overheat and cause fires. Just thought I'd let you know.

Thx for the response, I will try it when I get home.

Does this mean that the 9700SE is based on a 9500? Because I cannot find any decent technical information on this chip/card anywhere.

Could I softmod it then like the 9500 for example?

EDIT: I checked the battery and it is not one of the "bad" batteries. Thx for the info.

no the 9700SE and 9500 have identical marchitectures. afaia the only difference should be clock speed. and perhaps the amount of vram.
but every thing before the MR9800 (9x00) has four pixel pipelines and four only, there are no locked secret ones that can be activated like the desktop 9500/9700. The 9200 might have less I'm not sure.

I have tried to delete the line, but then the driver will not install.

If I install it manually, my games don't work (they work but the image is not working properly)

I will have to stick with the Mobility 9500 then.

Thx for the info all.
