Asus Z81K laptop MR9700 but no Catalyst??

I've got an Asus Z81K laptop that claims to have a Mobility Radeon 9700 in it. Linux calls it a 9600 at some point but I'm lead to believe that thre's no serious difference between the two.

Thing is, I downloaded ATI's catalyst 5.11 mobility driver suite and it refuses to install. Says I must contact my laptop vendor for driver updates. Strange thing is the Windows XP hardware manager calls the Asus driver version 6.somethingsomething. Starting HalfLife2 gives a dialog box indicating the Asus driver is old and that I should upgrade.

So, what to do. I'd like to get whatever newest drivers I can, but Asus seems to already have dropped any serious support for this relatively recent laptop model. Some people are convinced there won't be any BIOS updates or anything for it, and it only came out about 6 months ago or so.

Does Driver Heaven have anything that can allow recent ATI drivers to be installed here? Is this a true compatibility thing, or does ATI's installer just refuse to install here because someone doesn't want responsibility, but the driver would likely work well if the files got into the correct locations on disk?
