Radeon 9000/9200 + Cat 6.1 = No Go still

Once again ATI has decided not to bother supporting older Radeon's in the 6.1 release. Omega's and other modded are the same.

I have given up on ATI ever bothering to support this card, even with the 9000 being in such a large number of laptops. ATI ignores us now, the 9000 is dead to them.

well they started with the X800 mobile only now they support all the
way back to like the mobile 9700 last I looked, its NOT really ati's responceabilty
anyways beleave it or not its the sole reponceabilty of your laptop MFG
to provide you updated drivers
. But they "don't care" and as I understand
ATI can't provide support due to a "legal agreement". Also the fact the oems
choose some of the features/options you get so again it would require the driver
be made for you specfic laptop. There are oems working with ATI to allow them
to provide support, (since they obviously dropped the ball / wont bother)

So in short you can blamethe MFG of your laptop and prise ATI for the work
they have done....and are doing

also as you mentioned the PJ's mod tool and 3d part drivers like omega's and dhzp are options for people such as your self

Yeah, basically 9600+ (or is it9700) are supported by ATI, but Manufacturer's such as HP and Dell never bother with drivers after a year unless there is a major issue and even then it is tough to get support.

It seems that the problem is with hp/compaq laptops with mobility radeon 9000/9200 going blank after installing any drivers (omega/dhzp and others). HP didn't update the drivers since 04-2005 and ATI mobility doesn't support HP computers.
What strikes me as really weird is that older versions of omega based catalyst (up to versio 5.6) worked just fine. The problem started only with the release of 5.7, for me and for some other people at the forum at least.
What updates were introduced on version 5.7? maybe some feature there messes up HP/Compaq dispays

*BUMP*

Really though, think anyone could help us figure this out? I mean, we know the 9000 series has some <cough> power <cough> to them, but I'd kill to get rid of this refresh problem in most of my apps - redraws on certain things, game shadows going nuts depending on resolution, etc... The 5.6 drivers are awesome compared to the HP "updates", but STILL I'd like to resolve some issues!

Help with the new 6.1 drivers for old mobility users, please, Omega?

Have you tried contacting Omega directly? He's usually quite responsive to request's, if he gets feedback.
Also, what games are you having trouble with? Sometimes newer drivers are not the answer if you have older cards. Personally, I've found nothing that gets me better frames and IQ than the Omega 4.12's. Any game my lappy can play, plays best with them.

No response...

Yep, sure have tried to get ahold of Omega directly. Emailed, posted in the 6.1 Catalyst forum, posted here...dunno what to do. I haven't given the DH doohicky a try, using the ATI 6.1 drivers. I might do that in the meantime. But still - it doesn't make any sense to me why the drivers stopped supporting 9000-series at 5.7 - 5.6 is a gigantic performance, stability, and quality improvement over any HP driver I've used. I haven't used anything older, though. What card/lappy are you using? I might give those 4.12 drivers a shot.

Thanks,

Em

Didn't see your specs in your sig. I'll go try those older ones. Agreed, newer does not always equal better - but in the case of this laptop, one could only hope!

Thanks again,

reply from omega

Omegadrive replied to an email I sent him regarding the blank display we're getting from version 5.7 and up:
"Is a problem with the original drivers themselves, nothing I can do about it, ATI must fix it."
I guessed it myself, as all the other modded drivers based on cat 5.7 and up give exactly the same problem

But I still wish to know what change they made in version 5.7 that causes this mess. I guess it's either wait for a fix, mass mail ATI or mass mail HP for a solution now.

Yeah, I talked with Omega and also talked to the guys at DNA, even prior to 6.1. Back with 5.7+ ATI changed the drivers a bit when the opened up the drivers to laptop cards. It basically killed off mod-able support for older cards that are "supposed" to be supported by the builder.

Basically for older cards to work, ATI needs to pick up the slack where the OEM's left off. Most OEM's stop supporting video drivers after a year or two, if at all past release.

ATI sells an AGP AIW2006 which is a 9600 chip, and there support for that chipset is not very good anymore, image quality is much better in older drivers(4.12 is the best).

hey viking I saw your settings, and I noticed you have a somewhat similar laptop as mine, I listed my specs on the ATI laptop spec page. Anyway I saw you posted that your laptop runs games well, Im having some problems running Day of Defeat Source. I have tried everything under the sun to fix the problem. What pisses me off is that up until yesterday it ran fine, then I changed maps (had to download it from the server) and all I saw was dashes and lines that all drew to the center of the screen. The game was totally unplayable. Have you experienced anything like this in any of the games you play on your laptop? I see you use the omegas 4.12 and say they work great, I downloaded the latest omegas 5.12 from the website and I couldnt even make it into the game. My comp locked up fuzz and lines and whatnot and my computer automatically restarted. When it restarted my opening sony screen was totally screwed up with dots and dashes and my laptop continued to load to windows covered in fuzz and distortion. I turned it off waited for 2 hours and started it and it started fine, but once I tried to play the game it happened again. Now I must say that 2 months ago my laptop monitor came off it's top left hinge and I took it back to comp usa where I had my warranty and they fixed it, but while it was broken, I could start it up and the sony logo looked very similar to how it looked after the game crashes. With all that being said I have the most up to date Direct X 9.0c, and the omega drivers.I completely uninstalled the game and I'm currently reinstalling the DOD to see if maybe something in that map I downloaded caused a bug in my video settings. Like I said the game worked before with the latest ATI drivers that I got from SONY's website, but then the map caused all hell to break loose. I need some help, I guess thisd question is directed to anyone, not just viking, I put that because I see his name everywhere I see ATI and I figured if anyone knows it's him. Also, this just wasnt for DOD, Halflife 1, 2, and Counter strike as well. I run Steam so Im always up to date on my game files, Im really frustrated and I want to play my games again! Just so you know I also filed a report with ATI and Steam in regards to this issue, I havent heard anything back yet. Someone please help me!!!

* I should note that my warranty gave me a brand new display and hinges, but im not sure about anything in regards to my video card which must have been effected to cause the lines and dashes in the opening sony logo when it was broken

I got a Radeon Mobility 9200 64 MB dedicated (Not IGP) and I got mine working with Official Cats 6.3.

I noticed a difference between my manufacturer's drivers and official regular cats is that the regular cats don't include the GART or South bridge drivers needed in my laptop. If you completely clean your system of ATI stuff, you'll be missing AGP/south bridge drivers when you use Omega, modded official cats, or official catalyst mobility drivers.

The ATI site has drivers under the heading "Motherboards with ATI Graphics" that do include those drivers.

I modded those with Patje's Mobility Modder and they work on my laptop. I used version 2.2d of Mobility Modder not version 3 because somehow version 3 won't work with my laptop.

You may need to have a mobility driver working in the first place so the modded ATI install will detect that your video card is for the drivers. Windows Update installed my initial mobility drivers for me. Starting with manufacturer drivers may work too.

I suspect this might also work with other legacy mobility sets. (320m, 340m, 345m, mobility 9000 etc.)
