I read that EZ_PLUG was for Crossfire only. They need to fix their manual, I mean, It's always good to know these things before the computer starts freezing on you...

Here's a couple of other things that need to be fixed that I have been expierencing with this board.
Number 1: When Legacy USB support is enabled within a couple of hours I will have a total system lockup. Only work around I found for me with this, was to disable USB Legacy support. Number 2: Sound when gaming or when listening to music either using my X-Fi Extreme Music card or if I use the onboard ADI 1986 5.1 High Def Audio codec, sounds/music will skip and stutter, usually happens within 2 to 3 hours. Problem number two was so bad with Catalyst 6.1 and 6.2, that I had the squeal of death until Catalyst 6.3 came along. I'm to the point, where if these problems aren't fixed and soon, I may order me the ECS KA1 MVP Motherboard, which doesn't use none of this ULI chipset stuff, as it uses the Radeon XPress 200 chip, and the ATI SB450 southbridge. |

Thanks for posting that EZ-Plug suggestion about the USB 2.0. That's about the only problem I've run into with this board so far, other than the audio not working (I had a 7.1 sound card laying around anyway - no big deal.) and the manual had the pins wrong for the power set up. That was fun, getting my first build together and pushing the power button and watching nothing happen. It was anti-climatic at best. But the USB is working fine now, so thanks again.
I'd heard people having nothing but problems with this board after I'd ordered it. It's nice that there are actually people working on solutions and helping others out rather than just complaining like it's going to make anything better. |

Greg's notes on the ASUS A8R-MVP Motherboard.
BIOS is 0309 as shipped. Ethernet Dropped Connection Problem and Solution There are a number of users who have reported dropped connections with the onboard Ethernet. This appears to be a driver issue. Although the driver on ASUS and Microsofts site are newer than the ASUS released CD they still have issue. The latest driver "version 8.49.2.3" from Marvell does appear to fix the dropped connection issue. Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller driver version 8.49.2.3. http://www.marvell.com/drivers/drive...?dId=116&pId=3 File Name: yk51x86_v84923.zip Date: January 20, 2006 Size: 177 kilobytes Estimated Download Time: 00:00:03 on Dial-up (53.3 kbps) 00:00:00 on DSL/Cable (768 kbps) 00:00:00 on T1 (1.5 mbps) Description: Yukon GigE Windows XP Driver The included file "yk51x86.txt" has information on how to install the driver. Memory Timing Issue - Obtaining CMD-T1 Memory used: CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) TWINX2048-3200C2PRO With two ASUS A8R-MVP based systems using the memory shown above testing was done to see how fast we can run the above RAM devices. On my main system I was able to obtain 2-3-3-6 at 1T. memtest86 shows no errors after running for several hours. Prime95 torture test is also shows no issues after several hours. So on my main rig I am able to run at spec with this RAM. One the second system ("my wife's") I was not able to reach the same timing. I was however able to reach "2.5-3-3-6 at 1T". Reducting "tcl" from "2" to "2.5" was all that was required. USB - No problems here I have a hell of a lot of USB devices connected to my system including "SONY Silver USB 2.0/i.LINK External DVD Burner Model DRX810UL" and a "Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160812A 160GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100" connected via USB using the "KINGWIN KH-350U-BK Black External Enclosure". No issues with burning DVD's over USB. No lockups from USB access. Maybe it is a little slower than some other USB solutions. I have not taken the time to benchmark the speed issues with USB but functionally it works solid. Overall I am happy with the ASUS A8R-MVP Motherboard. I have not overclocked the CPU yet so this could change my point-of-view of this board but as it is right now I have no issues. Code:

Veridian, can you ask Asus where the hell that BIOS update is? They can fix the A8R-32 in a week(+), but they can't do the same in 3 months for us? It's aggravating as anything watching BIOS after BIOS getting released for every other board except ours.

Question put to Asus today asking when you guys would see an updated BIOS... awaiting response. I've also pointed them in the direction of this thread so they can see the probs you guys are still having.

I fixed my USB 2.0 lockup issue by plugging a 4pin Molex connector back in to the EZ Plug on my board. If the new bios does indead fix the sound/music stuttering and skipping issue, I'm going to stick with my A8R-MVP, as it is a very stable board when I do gaming. |

Did you go from a single processor to dual-core at the same time?
If you are running Windows XP or WCE2005 then you may want to install the AMD drivers if you are using a X2 processor or modifiy you "boot.ini" file yourself. The "/usepmtimer" option should be in your "boot.ini" file if you are using a X2 processor. My "boot.ini" file. Note: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition does not require the "/usepmtimer" option. Code:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer Quote:

Hello,
It's good news to hear that plugging in the EZ_Plug helped people with the stability issues. Bad news: I've been running pretty solid for the last little while now. However, I've just experienced the same locking up again today... and I wasn't even doing anything strenuous, just tapping away on MS Word. Good thing I have a compulsive habit of hitting ctrl-S every two minutes. Let me know if anyone else has similar recurring issues... BTW, Asus finally put bios 0402 back on their support website. Cheers, Zwisch |

Before Catalyst 6.3 came along, the sound/music stuttering and skipping issue was a lot worse and I even had popping and crackling, thanks to a Montego DDL I had before I got my Creative X-Fi card. Now it turns out that the drivers for cards that use the same sound chip as the Montego DDL, are so bad they cause blue screens of death.
I'm starting to lean towards the sound/music stuttering and skipping being bugs in ATI's Catalyst drivers and Creative's X-Fi drivers. |

Btw since you bought a DDL Montego, I'm assuming you use the SPDIF? But don't you miss the DDL feature on the Xifi card? Because I'm thinking about buying a DDL soundcard, since I use the SPDIF for connection to my 5.1 home theathre set and the stupid onboard one keeps one stuttering and skipping..

As far as I can tell, the skipping sound is an issue with either the Analog Devices driver or the SPDIF out port. Letting windows install the drivers disables the SPDIF port and most people report no skipping, so it could be the port or the drivers.

Another huge round of BIOS updates for many Asus motherboards today... and once again - we're not in the group. Asus sent ATI a fixed BIOS weeks ago (and it worked)... I can't understand why they aren't putting more resources into getting this fix out (except the obvious of - "they don't care")

I also have the sound/music skipping issue if the onboard sound is used. It was far worse before Catalyst 6.3 came along, which is why I say part of the issue is ATI's drivers. Creative hasn't put out the new X-Fi drivers yet, apparently they want to get the new X-Fi drivers right and fix issues before they put them out.
I'm about ready to bail out of my A8R-MVP, and order me the ECS KA1 MVP Crossfire board, as the other part of the problem is this motherboard, needing a bios update, which ASUS doesn't have the guts to put out. |
