exclamation Arghh..

The 0503 bios didn't do anything to help the memory errors. I get crash to desktops for almost every game and I can't even run 1T at 230 on ocz's new eb 4000.

My 4000+ clawhammer can't pass 2.65 ghz either.. So bad.. so bad.. I hate asus now. When intel comes out with that Conroe Extreme Edition, I'm deffinately getting that with a much better motherboard from a much better company who LISTENS.

Good for you
going from AMD to a new expensive Intel system

But not all ppl have the cash to throw around for building a new PC system from scratch..just because for a motherboard beeing buggy

There are ppl with worse than that

They have crashes and erratic behavior even in the default settings with these sollution
so do not complain about your OC

Overclocking is a unsupported feature by companies by the way
It's at your risk

Wow I love the fact that this is my 2nd attempt to write a response. Its ironic cause the first attempt was thwarted by the mobo. It decided to do the old random crash for no damn reason act. I dont mind this board, its just a tad bit buggy. It used to be that my ATI card wasnt getting used to the fullest. Now its just random crashes and having to wait for my system to loop 3 times before posting, and the fact that I have to restart my computer around 4-5 times for my oc to take effect. I just have a mild oc, 1.8-2.1. Tight ram timings, and htt at 800. I dont want to sit down for a hour just to get a good oc. Half the time it runs at what it wants to anyways. lol. I just hope Asus releases a bios to fix this current problem.

Hey all, been following this thread for a bit now. I've had the unfortunate experience of having an A8R-MVP for 2 months now. Since then it's been nothing problems. I've had hitching while playing games (BF2) and during DVD playback in addition to a couple of random reboots. I thought it had something to do w/ my wildly fluctuating VCORE (-.07 and +.12 variations just sitting in Windows) so I tried to RMA the board to ASUS to get a replacement. No such luck. A month later I got it back w/ a note telling me to "update BIOS" to fix my problem of being "Unable to boot". =P

Anyway. I rebuilt the machine w/ the same board and my new PSU (I RMA'd the PSU at the same time as the mobo thinking it could be either one). I also reformatted and installed Windows using PATA emulation rather than the ULI raid drivers. Hitching seemed to disappear (at least, it hasn't happened yet), but just this morning and last night I had three more crahshes. The crashes all occurred while playing COD2. Now while the prior crashes hadn't left me any logs (just a squeal of death and a reboot), these left logs.

Wanted to throw my 2cents in here ...

I've owned the a8r-mvp since release; I havnt even tried to OC my computer yet since I have had issues with the stuttering/crackle (and I like to get one thing fixed before I fool around with another ie OC).

I've tried everything to get this crackle/stutter effect to stop; mainly happens during games but still happens when watching movies or just using IE.

First 2 months I tried everything in the book to get this fixed; I had no luck; thought it might be my HD or MB or soundcard; and each one would point their finger at the other so after fooling around with all of that and any driver I could; I was still in the same position so I just 'attemped' to live with it although regretfully.

Last week I noticed the new bios 503 and I updated to that; wasnt exactly sure if it helped the stutter/crackling sound (I dont think I noticed it since then but I didnt really test it much).

So today I decided to search around some and see what other things I could update
I noticed a couple things ...

1. Looks like Marvell yukon updated their driver
2. ULI has a new integrated driver 2.20; although it seems NVDA's website is the only place you can dl it. ie wont connect on the ULI site.

I was having intermittent connection issues also (will see if this updated driver helps).

I did install the new ULI driver and the only thing it puts a icon in my taskbar and a bar down on my toolbar there (a bit annoying). I dont mind a new driver but I dont like things cluttering up my desktop ie icon in taskbar and toolbar.

It's called the ULI raid manager - the only thing it does it let me enable the NCQ function on my 3.0 sata drive. And also have some kind of even notification.

So has anyone else installed the new ULI driver? If so how did you get rid of the added things there since I dont want to use them/see them.

oh one other thing; when installing the ULI drivers should I install new USB 2.0 drivers also? I didnt but wasnt sure.

I saw the post about setting my HD to emulated PATA mode; and while I may do that if worse comes to worse but I dont really want too.

Any other ideas how to get rid of the stutter/crackling ie happens usually every 5-15 mins mostly when I play games. (I havnt noticed it since 503 bios but will test more this week).

thanks

-listing some of my components here-
Hitachi desktop 3gig sata 7tk500 (I think thats right) (I Acutally have 2 of these driver but only one installed atm; tried both drives to see if it would help the stutter)
Audigy 2 platinum
x800 gto c3d
amd 64 3200+

Like I was saying at the top of my post I tried everything to get rid of the stutter; to using 2 different HD's, to making sure I did everything I needed to with the HDs ie need to use a hitachi disk to enable 3gig mode etc etc; aud 2 not used, bought a new PSU, all the different ULI drivers, reinstalled winxp sp2 multiple times

As I am largly ignorant of SATA so bear with me. How does one switch to emulated PATA when the SATA drivers are already loaded and windows is installed?

In BIOS you can chose to enable PATA emulation for you SATA drives or you can use the ULI raid manager. So, in my case, I had originally installed Windows using the ULI Raid. Windows installed using those drivers and that was how it recognized my SATA drive. For me to switch to PATA emulation, I had to change the BIOS setting and then (because I didn't think ahead) reinstall Windows in that mode. If you were to treat the operation like a motherboard changeout (uninstall all the ULI chipset drivers ahead of time), you'd probably be able to get away w/out having to do the reinstall of Windows. I was an idiot, though, and uninstalled just the ULI Raid drivers and then switched modes. BSOD for the win!!

Wrongo, it's widely known that when you uninstall SATA RAID Drivers and run an SATA Controller as PATA device that you have to reinstall WindowsXP. There is no avoiding a reinstall of Windows, unless one does a repair reinstall, which repairs the WindowsXP installation, so that it will boot with an SATA Controller running in PATA or emulated PATA Mode.

I highly doubt ULI which is owned by Nvidia is going to fix the drivers.

I don't think this has been proven at all.

I am using the Uli drives and I am using Raid-0 with none of the problems reported.

I am also not using onboard sound.

At this point I don't know what the cause of your issue is but I also think it is too early to say the problem is with the Uli. Another solution would be to no use onboard sound or it may be worth looking for updates for the sound system drivers.

After all the problem is with the sound not losing data with the Raid setup.
Sure it could be the Uli but as I said.. it could be something else as well and I don't have the problem!

There's nothing wrong with ULi, it's all on Asus. The same ULi M1575 Southbridge works wonderfully in my shiny new DFI board. The A8R-MVP is simply garbage, and the company is even worse now, that's it. I'm so glad it's out of my case.

it is as simple as this...in all other imaginable combination i had the stuttering sound issue, until i changet to emulated pata mode and uninstalled uli drivers...that solved it...so i think the answer is pretty clear

So did you guys install the new bios yet and see if it helps with some issues? or how about the ULI 220 drivers?

Like I said I have the ULI 220 drivers here but dont like the additions they got here.

"I highly doubt ULI which is owned by Nvidia is going to fix the drivers" - I had a really sad face when I heard NVDA bought out ULI. When NVDA bought out voodoo way back when and left all the users high and dry for support I decided I wasnt going to buy another graphics card from them again (I had to buy a MB chipset but oh well).

anyways ...

someone install the ULI 220 drivers see if it helps them and what to do about the toolbar/taskbar things it adds.

"After all the problem is with the sound not losing data with the Raid setup."
Well I'm using a audigy 2 plantinum; non raided; and I have the crackle pop sound.
I am running it in 3g sata mode.
Still testing to see if the 503 fixed my issue

I have the sound stuttering too. For some reason when I enable emulated PATA mode, windows does not recognize my drive on the IDE controller. All i have in my device manager IDE ata/atapi controller is:

Thanks for your reply,
I have it set as :

Sata controller - enabled
Sata boot rom - disabled
Mode - emulated pata

I disabled the boot rom a while ago since I'm only using 1 HDD.

What BIOS can provide the highest voltage? Got a 165 today, but can only get it to run in 2,4GHz, becuase the goddamn voltage stalls on 1,44V

I will never purchase, recommend, or utilize Asus trash products again. I've had it. Since downloading and installing the 503 bios I've noticed twice that my cpu throttles back on it's own without even rebooting. It goes from 241 htt down to around 226 ...all by itself.

Bye bye Asus ...you've had more than a fare shake.

Same.

By the way, here's a copy/paste of a post I made at the AMD forums...

So if one enables emulated PATA in the BIOS then you dopn't need to make an F6 floppy when you install windows? If this is the case, then why even bother with SATA drivers?

becouse emulation is always slower then useing it in the drives "native mode"
but it there for those who find it hard to slipstram a cd, or incerting a floppy
a pressing a buttion way to trouble some when installing windows

I set ram to 2T with all the same settings that I was having issues with above and so far it's stable. I didn't have the 1T issue before but looks like I have it now. It's only a matter of time before I retire this board to F@h and get that DFI.

What's the best way to OC this board?

I notice theres a option to OC by a % ie 5 10 etc ... or should I just up the PCI bus and the cpu clock?

Also how much voltage should I be looking at for max voltage here ...
