aOpen i975x socket 479,is it compatable with merom?

The aOpen i975x is compatable with the current core duo yonah chips.And merom is supposed have the same pin configuration.
So will it be compatable.
And is it a viable upgrade path to buy a yonah now and upgrade to merom later.
The performance is tempting but seriously intel should have had 64 bit support for it.
So can someone clarify this please.
