Changing new Mobo in WinXP
Hi,
I'm about to go from a Soyo P4I Firedragon (845, FSB: 400MHZ) to a MSI 845PE Max2-FIR (845PE, FSB: 400/533MHZ). My co-worker tells that I can't install the new Mobo without reinstalling WinXP from scratch. Is this true or is he just ignorant?? Please let me know. |

It is normally a very very good idea to reinstall windows when changing motherboards, given that all of the hardware in the entire computer needs to be redetected and reinstalled inside Windows... I don't quite follow what you mean "from scratch" though - you wouldn't have to reformat or anything beforehand...

confirmed, ToshiroOC is wright, Install new Mobo, attach your XP disk, boot from the XP CD and overinstall your current installation. But beware cause the XP installation program will try to install a second XP copy, make sure you tell the installation program to overwrite your current installation. Otherwise it could get you in trouble. Another piece of advice: Make a backup of everything that's worth backing up. Good luck m8

When I fitted a new motherboard to Mr Kinetics PC it booted up at first with some stop
error *** STOP: 0x0000007B etc etc , saying the HD was corrupted. I did a bit of research at the time and its a common problem when you upgrade the motherboard with XP. Go here for some more info. that might be useful ![]() BTW. We got round it by setting the BIOS to boot from CD, putting in the XP disk and re-installing over your existing XP installation, as previously posted above

Okay, I have successfully installed the new MSI 845PE Max2-FIR Mobo by booting with the WinXP CD & reinstalling. I reinstalled the necessary programs from my backup and so far, everything is smooth.
Thx guys for your input

You could also have used WinXP's 'repair' feature so that you would not need to format your hard drive, although I would recommend a clean install of WinXP.

Install new MB without reinstall XP will cause you a lot of headache. Most of time it will give you BSOD.
