dunno much about RAID sooo ya
ya im wondering about the different arrays capible of being used like raid 0 raid 1 and whatever it goes up to and configs like 0+1 and such because im thinking of getting a dual SATA 400GB seagate 7200.10's and am most curious about raid 0 since i have two SATA150 ports that support raid 0 want better read speeds and do the two drives equal 400GB in raid 0 or 800GB?
thanks dudes!

Be aware that RAID 0 does have disadvantage if one of your 2 disks fails (I learnt that rather painfully). Much better to strip and mirror. (Pardon the phrase please)

Here are some good links for you to review:
http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html http://www.ecs.umass.edu/ece/koren/a...e/Raid/cp.html If you have your drives in a RAID 0 Array (Striped), 2 400Gig will be something less than 800Gig (I am running 2 80Gigs which equate to a 149Gig array) Here's my general wrap up: RAID 0 = Fastest and cheapest, no fault tolerance RAID 1 = Slowest and cheapest, fault tolerant Any other type of RAID array = more costs to improve the I/O speed to approach RAID 0 levels. The way I have my rig set up is 2 80Gig SATAII in a Raid 0, 1 160Gig PATA drive for backup. I use Symantec Ghost to back up my array to the PATA drive. This is a manual operation that would allow for some data loss in the even of a drive failure in my array, but it is faster and cheaper than a 0+1 array (only needs 3 drives instead of 4). |

I suggest that instead of getting two 400gig drives, get two small drives for raid 0 and one 400gig for storage.
Use the raid array for your OS, apps, and games. If you use a very large array for everything then you will not be able to take full advantage of raid 0 because you will have to use a larger stripe size if you want decent throughput with large files like movies. |

hmm.... the main reason for this is being that i want to play games and the load is annoying.... have to wait 5 minutes sometimes in FEAR for a map to pull up. and i only have 2 SATA ports and PATA drive .
and i do know that a raid 0 array has no back up system but neither does a single drive system :P i do plan to use my 200GB pata drive as storage.....i also do not plan on keeping this machine much longer so im trying to limit myself to buying stuff i can transfer to a new board

First off:
The 7200.10 drivers are native SATA2 16mb cache hardrives, you'll most likely NEED the SATA2 ~> SATA1 jumper to get the drives to fire up and work correctly. (but this isn't a real concern, aside from losing the NCQ advantage, but still no biggy )Secondly, Raid 0 COMBINES the total amount of 2 or more drives, you "can" mix and match makes/sizes/models/speeds, however general rule is that in a raid 0 array, the smallest drive sets the standard for all the drives. Speed however shouldn't slow down the other drives capable of faster speeds, it just won't be prime, and it will definitely be slower then if it were prime. I've never had an issue putting together 2 or more different branded or different model drives. Raid 1: Mirroring, basically you take 2 or more drives, of equal size (they don't have to be, but once again, the smallest dictates the maximum capacity). Any information written to one drive is exactly duplicated and placed on the other drive on the fly (excellent if you want a backup of everything). The advantage is that one drive can fail, and you can continue working without having to run through a restore process, hell you don't even have to replace the drive right away, but order another and replace the other, and the raid controller should be able to move data from one drive back onto the other. Raid 0+1 While this sounds good, i've seen results that don't exactly seem all that great. While it's saposed to provide a speed boost and also backup, it's neither cheap nor is there a major gain. 2 or more drives for Raid 0, combined to give you a total that must fit onto the single backup drive for the raid 1. Raid 5 : Imo raid 5 is utterly beautiful, while maintaing nearly all the speed you could get from raid 0, it also has the advantage of being rather "backup" sitiuation. But you need a few extra drives to get it's full advantage. Raid 5 however isn't widely available yet. IMO, the best setup is a few drives in Raid 0, then another drive, just a typical storage drive, where you can make frequent backups to whenever you really need to. ATM, i have 4 drives in raid 0, while on occasion, i stick another drive in using the last available sata port on the board to backup things onto it. When i'm done, i disconnect, put the drive away in safe place, and game on. So if your getting 2x 400gb drives, and you use the following: Raid 0 : Combined speed and performance and space : 2x 400gb = 800GB + 2x Speed Raid 1 : Single drive speed and performance and space : 2x 400gb = 400Gb + Backup Raid 0+1 : Similare to both above requires 3 drives : 2x 400gb + 1x 800gb = 800gb +2x speed + Backup

zaim: Did you do that water bottle demo yourself. I'm gonna keep that photo for a demo at work when people ask me questions about RAID. Do I need to pay a copyright usage fee LOL?
