Dell GX260 Not connecting to DHCP

My friends GX260 (after 2 fresh install of xp) is still saying he cannot connect to the DHCP server

no firewall, no router, just direct cable modem to nic

tried on laptop and internet works fine

he resetted the modem each time it moved from computer to notebook and nothing

he even tried the winsock xp fix patch (something like that) and it doesn't work

help?

Trying uninstalling, and re-installing the on-board lan.

Are you sure the laptop doesn't have a static IP on its network card? Most modems don't have DHCP servers on them
