PCI wireless card- Computer does not start on insertion
As title suggests putting in a Belkin F5D7000 in the pci slot causes the computer not to power up at all.
The motherboard light shows that it is on but the LED on the pci card is not on. Seems like there's something wrong with the pci slots. It's possible it's a cable problem since computer had to be reassembled recently though I can't think what. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. |

Anything else PCI to cross check with, would an old PCI graphics run as a secondary?, or is there a PCI modem card?

Getting it replaced though my symptoms are different. The guy above managed to turn his pc on, an improvement over my situation where that doesn't happen.
I'm getting hold of a replacement and see if that helps. |

Not exactly sure which ASUS mobo you've got from your profile. But, have you tried swapping PCI devices around?

Afraid I have no PCI devices to spare. I find it hard to believe though that all the slots are faulty so I think it must be the card. I'll let you know. Though i've never known a component causing the pc to not turn on especially when it's non essential to its function.

What I was getting at is, if you have other PCI cards installed, try swapping them around physically. It could possibly be an IRQ conflict. That doesn't usually keep a system from completely starting, but, it's worth checking out. |

. How do I check if it's an IRQ conflict?

im a FREAK

Did you clear the CMOS and try?
Was the replacement the same brand and model of WiFi card? If it is doing the same thing in all PCI slots then it will not be an IRQ conflict. Even if it was it would not keep the board from posting. Does your MOBO have an on board NIC? If so, did you disable it in the BIOS? |

If it was IRQ, you'd probably find one slot it would work in, but with APIC mode (IRQ's > 15 available) conflicts are not as common as in old PIC mode with 4 shared IRQs across all PCI.
Yes, PCI should share IRQs without problems, but in practice, some devices just were not good at it. One thing, maybe ensure that the BIOS is set to "Plug & Play OS", so it will rely on the OS to sort out non-boot bevices.

Jeeze, reminds me of the days of ISA cards where you had to plan out which card went where and which IRQ went where on a whiteboard and then jumper it all and then find out it didn't work and do it all over good times...
