Wireless Network Problems

OK, I have a D-Link WBR-2310 and Wireless adapter WUA-2340 I'm trying to use to setup a wireless network for my computer. I can get the system to work a awhile then it just stops working. I've tried using the setup wizard in the router but still am having no luck. What am I doing wrong or what am I missing? I could really use some help. Please enlighten me.

I'm beginning to think that the wireless adapter might be faulty in some way. When I look in the Device Manager under Network Adapters it shows that the WUA-2340 ie running correctly. For awhile it will run then just stop working, but if I reboot the adapter is working again. I'm confused.

Try downloading a huge file, does it do this gain?

I've tried d/ling some big files recently and it does seem to stop while I'm doing this, but then it has happened while I've been browsing also. Can't figure it out.

What kind of distance is there between the router and the adapter? Also, is there anything else in the vicinity that uses the same kind of frequency signal?

Additionally, what were you using previously? Have you simply added a wireless router to the system, or did you remove the previous configuration? I ask because it may be that the PC is trying to re-establish the previous link instead of hanging on to the current one. If you replaced the previous setup, did you also uninstall all related settings/setup/software for it?

In any case, to continue from that thread, I was talking with a D-Link tech recently about an issue I was having with their DI-624 router, and decided to ask them about your issue. The first thing the tech asked me was, "Does he have a WBR-2310 router?" I asked him why. Apparently there is a known issue with the 2310 router where it will reboot itself when downloading files of any significant size (over 5mb). Now that I know you have that router (which I should have asked before) his advice seems relevant. The techs advice was to upgrade the firmware, however he warned that the issue is not fully resolved with the updated firmware as he has had cases of people still having the rebooting... just not as bad. Also, with each firmware update the issue seems to be getting better and better.

You can grab the latest firmware HERE, which is version 1.04. The D-Link tech also let me know that a version 1.05 update will be out pretty soon as well, and it seems to be promising so far in their testing.

Be warned: DO NOT update your firmware over wireless or you could risk messing up the router. Be sure to do the update with a computer wired to the router directly.

To answer your question, DS. I was using a DI-624M router with a DWL-G132 wireless adapter. This setup worked very well. The DWL-G132 went bad last week and stopped working. I bought a WUA-2340 to replace it. Well, that's when the problems started. The internet connection would work for awhile and just drop off. It would just go completely dead. The only way to get it going again was pull the 2340 out of the USB socket and reinsert it or reboot the computer. I bought the WBR-2130 last night becsuae from what I've seen on D-Links website the 2340 would only work with the 2310. I followed the directions installing the software first for the router and then for the adapter but the same things keep happening. Something probably is not configured right, but I have no clue what.

Tipstaff, I apologize for starting a second thread but I was starting to get a little pissed off at this stuff and felt if I posted follow up info in the same thread it would have gotten me no help. Sorry about that.

Ah.. I see. So originally a DI-624, and now a WBR-2310. Same problem with each. Given that scenario my first impression would be a bad card, or something else within the system is messed up (edit: OS, software, driver, or setting wise).

However, since you have the 2310 now it's definitely worth giving the newest firmware a try.

BTW, from what I've been told by D-Links tech is that the 2310 and the 624 are actually not that much different. It's pretty much the same unit, just different coverings. He was mentioning to me that a lot of people were even using the 624's firmware on the 2310 as a stop-gap measure to get the thing to work.

I'm truly sorry about not coming back and relating how I solved my problem but I got on some other projects and it cleaned slipped my mind. When I came back today and saw Tipstaff's PM it all came rushing back.

Anyway there is mot much to relate. After I had the problems I contacted D-link tech support and related my problems to them. I was advised to flash the firmware of the router as Tipstaff had originally suggested. Well I did that and the same problems continued and after talking with the D-link tech support again i was advised that there was probably something defective in the router itself and I should return it to the store where I bought it and get another. Well, after fooling around with the new router and having the same problems with it and talking to D-link tech support again and not really getting any positive help, I returned the D-link router to the store and bought a Linksys router and wireless adapters to replace the D-link stuff. That was what solved my problem, I've since then updated the firmware on the Linksys router and things have been good ever since.

Again I apologize for not coming back sooner and relating what had happened.
