Question

What is the difference between a modem, lan, or nic card? Can they all be used for surfing the web?

Yes.

A modem uses your phone line, a LAN is a "local area network" which consists of a hub/router/cables/NIC's, and a NIC is a "network interface card" which is used to hook your pc up to a LAN/WAN/DSL/cable/router/hub thingy.
