Scsi

Hello,
First of all, i got no idea where to post this, but it seems to me there is no forum for all other hardware (or is this the place?)

Anyway, i got an SCSI adapter in my comp. with a CDRW connected on it! Now i dont know anything from SCSI, but i DO know that the card issnt configd. good!
Because when i config it to one way, windows add's like 10 cdrw's to my computer And if i config it the other way, windows wont even boot at all... etc etc..

Now its a Old Adaptect AHA-2940/AHA-2940W scsi card, and the CDRW is a Plextor PlexWriter 4x2x20 ...

If you want to know anything more, please post it and ill look it up!

Hope some one can help me!

Greetz

Well make sure you have it set on a id 1-6 not 7. 7 is for the card also make sure you have your cdrom termanated. If this is the only device you have then set your cdrom to zero and make sure you have it termanated. Scsi cards rarley die. also when booting your comp does it list any errors from the scsi card and does it list the cdrom.

Its set on 0, its only device, and 7 is set for the card.... So that is ok, but what means "termanated" ?

on the back of your cdrom ar jumpers 3 sets are for id's 1 set is block size (used for unix I think) 1 is test mode and 1 is for termenation. Basically you are telling the controller this is the last device. Upon bootting your computer the 2940 card should not give any errors if you have it term. you should see
crtl-a for setup
0 Plex xxxx
etc.
If it is not term. it will say insufficaint term on internal well I forget the rest of it.
http://www.plextor.com/english/suppo...s/man_4220.zip also check this out this is your manual.

jumpers are set on "term" and "PRTY", when i connect it like this, boot shows me " Press CTRL A etc etc" Then next line *SCSI ID:LUN NUMBER # :# 0:0 -Plextor CD-R PX-W4220T, Also when i boot, and i have my cd closed, it takes long time till pc will boot! When opend, it go much faster...

*edit*

After second line comes NO SCSI BOOT DEVICE FOUND

BIOS not installed!!!!!

What it means?

might try installing aspi for windows. Adaptec.com. Was this working correctly before? What os? If other than XP you should dl new drivers for your card also.

1 I would go into the bios of the contrler and set it to default save changes reboot then go back into the controller and dissable bios.
2 I have had problems in the past w/ Asus boards and scsi not a good combo.

Just rememberd check all of your pins and check your cable if 1 pin is not making contact it will not work correctley This I do know. Scsi cables are very delicate. Internal cables are 4-15 dollars so not that big of a deal. I just had to replace my cable for my cdroms I scraped it on my case while cleaning the dust out and none of my cdroms would work very well kept getting erros then I check the cable. Just giving ya som ideas.

Ok another Idea if it's a 2940uw flash your Bios http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...y=afuv220.exe. I installed one for a freind on a XP machine and in order for it to work correctley i had to flash the Bios. Ok so I noticed you said 2940w there is an updated ver for that also http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...y=2940v116.exe
It sounds like you have done evcery thing correctly.
Dangit you cannot flash 2940w unless you have equipment.

Yeah i've downloaded this too, but i dont understand how to do this, when i unzip it, there are 2 files, 1 .txt the other .hex...
And the text file say's:

README.TXT for 2940v116.EXE
************************************************** ***************************

8BIOS32.HEX is intended for users of the Adaptec AHA-2940, and requires EPROM
Programmer equipment. If you do not have access to this type of equipment,
you will not be able to program your own EPROMs. If you feel that your
hardware problems require an update of the AHA-2940 firmware, please consult
with Technical Support on this issue.

And i dont understand this

Well short of installing card and cdrom in another "test" computer I would disconnectmy ide cdrom's an try booting. If you have Agp vid card make sure scsi is at least in pci slot 2 if pci vid card vid card should be in slot 1 On board vid scsi does not mater. Also check to see if card is seated properly. If all is ok i still think it is the cable seen it to many times.

Well sorry did'nt fix it. I have a goodwill computer store in my town that sells used parts really cheap if you got a place like that pick up another controller. I still think the cdrw still works. this is the hardest scsi problem i've ever had.
