Well, I finally was able to get Vista installed on my computer, but I've found out since that this Gigabyte X48T-DQ6 came out of the box OCed to 3.6Ghz and the FSB at 400. When I boot the computer the e8400 shows up on the post screen at 2.80Ghz (100x7). The multiplier is locked at 7 in the Bios and I can't change it to 9 were it should be. I can't even lower the FSB to 333 where it should be. Can anybody help me help me out.

One more thing while I think about it, I've been getting all kinds of BSODs all night long. This board is very unstable right now. I'm wondering if I got a defective board, is that possible?

Well this one was, kris. Almost makes me think that this board was one of newegg's open box items, but that's not the way I ordered it.

Could be. I'm also thinking the Bios is corrupted because I cannot access any of the CPU items in the Bios.

well, at this point, i don't think it's a defective board.

this is what i hope. your may need to change your BIOS setting a bit, and that's all you need to do for now.

set the BIOS to 333x9
memory multi to auto
your DIMMs voltage to the voltage value suggested by the maker of the RAM
all rest of voltage settings to auto (or normal).

then see if this BIOS setting can make the computer stable.

and then later you can try overclocking the system by increasing the CPU FSB setting slightly. but now try the BIOS settings first and see.

he cant access his BIOS, the settings dont change.

hey, have you tried a BIOS flash? could save the pains of shipping.

go to your BIOS setup program and load BIOS optimal default setting (or BIOS default setting),
otherwise, you can clear most of the CMOS values by using the clear CMOS Jumper.

and then try again with the BIOS settings i mention above.

I'm actually making some progress. Got the CPU Frequency to 3.00 (333x9). Memory timings are 7-7-7-18 1T. One more question, what is the normal voltage for an e8400?

i would just leave it at normal for now, what does it say the normal is for the CPU (greyed out area below where you set the CPU voltage)

your CPU has VID Voltage Range of 0.85V – 1.3625V

CPU VID can be different from one CPU to another.
the BIOS detects the VID value, in your board if you set the Core voltage to "Normal",
then the BIOS feeds the CPU with its required VID voltage.

the board's BIOS is most likely to use the max CPU VID voltage value, which is 1.3625 V., which is set in BIOS at around 1.364x V., which should be shown within Windows at about 1.344x V.

The Bios says that Normal voltage should be 1.255. That's were I set it too.

Hey, just want to say thanks for your patience and help in putting up with my lack of knowledge. I've built about 20-25 computers for friends, my family and myself and this is the first one were I had to change so many setting in the Bios to get things working. Thanks for your help, hobo. panging there really has the wealth of knowledge, helped me out quite a bit a few weeks back. In the senerios panging decribed above, i leave my CPU voltage set to normal w/ load line calibration on and i bounce back and forth between 1.136V -1.168V in windows, prime stable 6 hrs.

the above info also apply to Gigabyte's X38/P35 (DQ6's and DS4's and may include all the rest of the boards model's).

and, aslo, whenever you have a problem with the Dual/Quad BIOS recovery thing,
you can just clear most of the CMOS values by using the clear CMOS Jumper, or, just do a BIOS reflash (and also you may want to set the BIOS utility to not keep the DMI data before reflashing BIOS),
this will clear all of CMOS settings and you can start fresh with your BIOS setup, and try overclocking you system again.

there is one specific BIOS setting, but this is required DDR2-1200, so this is just for your info.

500 CPU FSB and Memory multi 2.40x, and set the System Voltage Control [Auto]... but, be careful, due this BIOS setting may auto add a lot of volts to the PCIe.

my DDR2 memories, for a stable setting, normally requires 2.3-2.35V when running them at DDR2-1200MHz,
the CPU may normally require more volts when running it at 500 FSB.

however, when i tried setting the System Voltage Control to Auto, i have stabled the memories with only 2.15V (BIOS auto set to 2.15V, and it's around 2.17-2.19 in Windows)

my friend has discovered the setting and told me to try, which i was surprised that the setting actually worked for me as well,
then later i found on the web that there is other who also has the same experience with this setting, he uses an OCZ high speed DDR2 modules, which used to required like a 2.35V, and if i can recall, his CPU used to require more volt when he set the VCore manually.
then he found out later that the system can be prime stable with lower on both the VDimm and VCore.
