PC turning off after boot
re-inserted my old CPU after finding out that my new e8400 did not work even though my mobo showed it supported it on current bios. before this tho i tried a suggestion many had said worked and adjusted the voltage a little bit to see if the e8400 would boot (it didnt).
so i re-insert my old cpu a 3.0 p4 into my p6n platinum sli board with a 8800gt tried booting and it boots then dies, so i figure its the voltage settings, i hit the cmos button and try again depending on how long i wait the post stays up longer... if i try quickly then i dont even make it past the MSI logo page, ive made it as far as "load fail safe" on my bios but the PC always turns off (completely) any ideas? my thoughts are it may be a heat issue and that i should wait for the motherboard to cool down or something... i have yet to try my 3.0 since this issue in another computer... im burning out on trying to fix everything but i will try it today and post results, the motherboard does recognize the processor and the ram tho, which makes me think its something else. any help would be greatly appreciated |

you should have just replied to your old thread makes things simpler.....
could you have killed the processors due to some carelessness? (did you do something that couldve fried them?) like run without heatsink?

both the processors work in my friends computer and are both recognized he runs a gigabyte mobo... my computer will recognize the 3.0 p4 in the post but turns off shortly thereafter... i tried once again and it lasted longer and went to the boot menu so i turned it off and added on my HD, the next time i booted it turned off quickly... ive now re-seated the heatsink to make sure it is secure and am going to try and boot it in a while

If the procs are fine and work in any other system except your motherboard, the simple solution is to disconnect the hard drives, any extra PCI cards, any optical drives and leave nothing but a single stick of RAM, the CPU, the video card and the power plugged in and see if it does this. If it keeps happening after that, then your mobo is probably dead.
