Hard drive stopping with nForce 2.41

Hi guys. I have an 8RDA+ and if i restart the comp, with the latest nforce 2 drivers my secondary slave hard drive spins down 1 or 2 secs just before the effective restart, then powers up at the POST screen ? does anyone else has problems like this ?

I have noticed this myself but I only use one drive. I can definitely hear this happening though.

Yeah, another "optimisation" from nVidia. Anyone else ? Come on, post quickly, before your hard drive fails

I get this since I installed the new drivers, doesn't seem to cause any problems, it's just a

bit worrying

"that hang is the SW IDE drivers parking the drive heads and shutting the motor off...and then turning it back on..."

read that today. dunno how accurate it is but sounds like what was happening on mine until I rolled 'er back...

I have heard that the new drivers have a fix that fixes the problems with HDD corruption. Maybe this is how nvidia has fixed this problem. Actually parking the drive before a shutdown is a good idea.

Yeah, but i don't think my hard drive likes parking its heads 10 times a day, with every restart... Think only that after you install WinXP SP1, you install these drivers and that you'll restart at least 20 times before you have installed all your preferred software. This 100% shortens the hard drive's life. I'm pissed off, I was right buyin an ATI

My system is definitely alittle snappier with the new drivers but the sound it makes at boot doesn't really sound healthy. I rolled back, I suggest you guys do the same. nVidia must be on crack if they think people won't be alittle concerned with this

I'm gonna keep the new drivers, I was just worried as to what the sound was. Now I

know what it is I'm ok with it, I don't see what harm it will do and as Wyre said it seems

like a good idea.

Parking the read/write heads does not damage your HDD, Having the drivers force parking of the HDD heads during shutdown, and allowing the motor to spin down on restarts, and shutdowns is just a precaution. I have two old ATA33 1GB HDDs that do this. Because they are programmed to do so. AND THEY ARE STILL WORKING! perfectly I might add!

It might not sound healthy .. but let me ask you this... Would you rather have the heads fully parked, and the the HDD shuts down ... or would you rather have the HDD shutdown with the heads still out on the platter? Think on that...

Well, aren't harddrives that have been built within like the last ten or fifteen years supposed to not have to spin down and "park"? I still have a couple ancient machines with equally ancient harddrives and these things have landing zones where the heads physically land! Obviously, do this enough times and the drive will burn out, maybe even catch fire! (One of these machines burst into flames while I was using it about six or seven years ago. Becuase of the strange airy conditions inside the box the flames died after a few seconds of burning....) If you didn't have a proper shutdown, the heads would physically land on the platter surface, killing the disk!
I could be wrong....

Anyway, go with what you're comfortable with. I really don't think this'll do anything to the harddrives except cause a reboot to be a tad bit longer. I have yet to experience it since I don't even have an nForce2 board yet....

Let me see if I can get a picture of a modern HDD internals, and the parking mechanism... I will edit this post later after I get a good picture.

I have posted this in the other threads but ill post it here.

the 2.41 Nvidia IDE drivers suffer on most systems 10-25% performance loss. And I found my Hard drives doing all manner of unusual things, none of which seems particularly good to me, certainly not combined with the performance loss anyway.

Nvidia a day after they released the 2.41 set, released the 2.42 set and REMOVED the IDE driver. And they now have WHQL certification. this speaks volumes. Roll back the IDE driver guys, it sucks.
