no raid 5 option in mediashild
Hello,
I just assembled a small file server, and used a asus m2n-e board, with the nvidia nforce 570 controller. Have 4 sata disks connected, and wanted to try out raid 5 configuration. But I’m very confused at the moment. I have no option to choose raid 5. Only mirror and stripe. I can see all 4 disks in mediashild. Why have I no raid 5 option? |

The board supposedly supports RAID5. If you select Stripe does it give you any other options? RAID5 is a stripe array but with parity involved. Either way I would highly suggest staying away from RAID5 with a software onboard controller, especially one with the Nvidia 570 ICH. Their RAID controllers are awful. Your drive speed is going to be horribly slow. I would highly suggest you get yourself a good hardware RAID controller if you are wanting to go the RAID5 route.

RAID0+1 you lose a little capacity but you'd gain performance for certain. |

i also agree with Lowfat here. if you're going with RAID 5, get yourself a hardware RAID controller card.
but, on a side note...what happens if you attempt to use only the 3 of the 4 drives in RAID 5? Will media shield allow you to use RAID 5? also, have you made sure that you have enabled all of the proper SATA ports for RAID? |
