nothing but problems with MSi X48c platinum

Specs:
Intel Core2 duo e8400 (E0)
MSI X48c platinum
2x2GB PC6400 DDR2
Corsair 750Watt PSU
Club-3D HD4870OC

The problem is that the cpu and mem suddenly started running at half speed, because the FSB was halved to 166x4~=666MHz. All the powersaving functionalities of the motherboard and cpu have been shut down, so it isn't that the core is clocking itself down.

I've had this board for 3 weeks now, it's actually the second board, I had the first board for a week before RMA'ing it. Now I'm sending this one back for RMA too. Both had this problem. Talked to MSI support about it, they said they couldn't replicate the problem so couldn't help me besides the basic help: Download the latest (beta) bios.

Now I'm hoping I can return it and get another motherboard from a different manufacturer. I'm thinking about the ASUS P5E deluxe and the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4.

Which one would you recommend?

The reason I'm thinking about these two is because they both have the X48 chipset from intel (I'm thinking of running crossfire in the future) and they have DDR2 support.

Why not save your money and aim for a Core i7 rig when the prices go down?
Otherwise I'd go for the GA-X48-DS4. It seems like a great, solid board. And I'm pretty sure Gigabyte would give you better customer service than MSI is right now.

Was the CPU cooler mounted correctly? I had similar issues and i found out that the cooler wasn't mounted correctly.

Re: nothing but problems with MSi X48c platinum

yeah it was mounted correctly, I had remounted the cooler when I got the problem a few days ago and that didn't fix it. I bought an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro to replace the stock cooler when I RMAed the motherboard for the first time. Because the stock cooler was really difficult to mount and it pulled really hard on the motherboard, it was bent by the cooler quite a bit.

But how would it be mounted incorrectly? when the plugs aren't fully pressed down and through the motherboard? because that was the main problem with the stock cooler.

Bart,

Assume that you have visited the MSI user forum....this problem has been discussed there before...

Good luck

I didn't open this thread to ask for solutions for the problem. I opened it to ask which of these two motherboards the members of driverheaven would pick as a replacement for the msi x48c:the ASUS P5E deluxe and the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4

I would have the P5E Deluxe. Used both boards and the ASUS is a bit easier to overclock (I'm assuming that's what you're buying it for :P). I prefer the layout as well on the ASUS board if you're using multiple graphics cards.

Tough call though they are both great boards

============

I understand but MSI is good manufacturer (my MSI x48 platinum is rock solid) and getting a different board if your problem is solvable seems to be spend more cash than necessary (just thinking out loud and I have not been experiencing your frustration either) ..

It appears that this is an issue with the x48c board and CPU with E0 stepping ..do not know if BIOS update is the solution. I know this does not matter because you are moving in a different direction.

But good luck, I like gigabyte board which I seriously considered before buying the MSI x48 platinum

Cheers

Re: nothing but problems with MSi X48c platinum

I tried several bios versions, including beta bios. And the release versions of 7.2 and 7.3, non of those solved the problem.

Re: nothing but problems with MSi X48c platinum

I'm not buying through newegg, I'm getting it from the store where I bought the MSI board from. But it seems they don't sell the asus board there anymore, so I probably have to go with the gigabyte board. Unless they still have one asus board lying around
