Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
that's very true! i remember one time i didn't properly seat the HSF on a skt A sempron, and within a second, i was smelling burnt electrical components. took off the CPU, and underneath the CPU, there were burn marks everywhere.

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
It survived, and compound was the right amount.
I could see from the remains of the compound on the HSF that there was partial contact and could see some slight scratches where it was riding on the ledge or step of the socket..... it was crooked for sure. Having the MOBO's shut off temp at 75c helped a lot I would imagine.... the board wouldn't let it get any hotter than that...... the settings can go up to 90c, default is 85c so I'm glad I had set it down to 75c when I got this board and was using it with the 2200 or that barton would be toast. I lucked out big time on that one...... but it's running fine and at somewhat normal temps now....... I'm not used to these AMD temps, but it's within reason from what I've read.

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
well this is what I've ended up with, a 2800 Barton running at 2.08Ghz with 1Gig of DDR400, Matrox AGP and a wireless. I haven't installed the Audigy yet but the live! card is in there running KX Drivers. Runs good and should do it's job. I did machine that Aerocool HSF and it's running 45c at idle, up to 55c max under load, I've read this is common temps for a setup like this, and I'll never be running this thing that CPU intensive anyways.
Theres a shot of it in it's element too...... the basement!!! ........ dual monitor, Yamaha keyboard, 4 input control surface (hacked Radio Shack mixer) . My guitar amps are on the other wall and the idea is to mike the amps LOUD because of the guitar to amp interaction that happens at high volume..... something you can't do with VST or processors. Also something I can't do upstairs in the loft..... the neighbors don't approve... ![]() Thanks for everybodys help on this. I won't be clocking this one.... but I do still have that 2200 that runs nice at a 14 multiplyer........ need a mobo.....

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
Sweet man glad ya got it up and running have fun with it
![]() I may do something similar with the old Cele rig the mobo has onboard video which should be plenty for a recording system. All I need it a soundcard and a PSU for that one.

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
Thanks guys..... nothin super fast compaired to most rigs in the forum, but it's a multi-track recorder, not a gaming system so it's plenty.
@Gigawatt ...... those 4 RCAs are AUX inputs from the 4 channel control surface, Two to the Live! card and two will go to the Audigy. The drivebay I/O for the Audigy will sit above (or below) and adds another 4 analog inputs, for 8 mono inputs. More are possible plus there's digital I/O possible too. The molded cable is all I have left from my Fostex X14 cassette recorder. ![]() @MacDaddy ...... It's a great use for an older system, making a recorder, for just the recording part you don't need a lot of horsepower unless you get carried away with VSTi plugins. I save all that stuff for mixdown and do that on my P4 in the loft..... which really isn't all that powerful either but it does well enough. So, Yeah! "it's an 8 track recorder". It's also all surplus/used/salvage stuff. The whole rig is salvaged actually....... including the Yamaha which is used as a Midi controller. ![]() Gotta love Junk....... I'm building my whole studio with "Junque"

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
I agree Tyrsonswood the old Cele system should work well for that. I would also be doing mixdowns, etc on one of the other two machines or at the studio.
Cool as well GigaWatt looks like we should all have some music to share on DH this spring and summer

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
Nope no harm in asking for sure man I remember it actually.
Not to go to far off topic but you should see some of the older car audio stuff we have at work lol. Original Pioneer/Craig 8 track players (Yes they did work together back then) .... underseat record players that play standard 45's and AM/FM OEM radios using ALC in the 60's which were all the rage in the Pioneer head units a few years back

Re: Old School Athlon XP cooling???
I found a better video card at the surplus store, a GeForce FX 5600...... it wasn't really necessary as the Matrox would have done fine, but for $5 it's an upgrade.... I actually got the 5600 and a 5200 for the $5 but the 5200 needs a fan. Even though I'm not gaming the hotter video card does seem to have boosted system performance some just in general. It has dual out with one being DVI.... one of those free monitors doesn't work right through the VGA input so it has to be DVI....... so this card was a plug and go for this setup. It even came with the CD's, box, cables, etc.
Still need to setup the sound cards, I haven't pulled the Audigy from my P4 yet... it's going to get a slight overhaul and I'll switch cards around then. I like this AMD, quick enough and quite stable. With the Video card I got about $50 in it plus some parts I had layin around. It's not dual core (or better) but it's not doing that kind of work either.

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/hardware...win-98-se.html What ended up happening is she brought over her old system for me to grab the ethernet card out of and told me to keep what I didn't need as spare parts. Her CPU and mainboard were screwed the CPU actually melted right into the socket .. nasty ![]() Anyway I said I needed a PSU and a soundcard to get the Cele rig up and running that system had a 450W PSU in it generic but should be good enough. I am shopping for a dedicated sound card specifically for recording but not turning away freebees for now lol. I also found these two items in it and with the NZXT Whisper case I was sent as a sample should be the start of a nice quiet recording rig

Cool.... I've got those same two cards in my cele that I use for internet and general stuff. That Live! card plays music all day that I have on my hard drive. Sounds great. I don't use it for recording because it doesn't have the 40 pin header and my other 3 do. The GeForce2 looks great on this 19" CTR too. That other video card I got is a GeForce 3 64mb, not a 5200...... no biggy, add a fan and it will run. I don't have a system for it or the Matrox anyways..... more spare parts. We need to start a thread about these recording rigs from spare parts....
