Re: building another system which motherboard??

is there any chipset that you like to use in particular? like an NVIDIA 780i, 790i chipset board, or something intel chipset based? like a 945, 965, 975, x38, x48 chipset?

if it were my personal system, i would go with the NVIDIA chipset motherboard. but that's only because i'm more familiar with that chipset.

Re: building another system which motherboard??

I have had good luck with both ASUS and Gigabyte X38 boards the X48 I haven't had a chance to try out.

If you want true Crossfire with ASUS chances are very good you will have to use DDR3.

Re: building another system which motherboard??

not much an ATI x-fire guy, so i couldn't help you in that part of your MoBo search.

however, mosfets are essentially voltage regulators. they regulate the voltage going to the CPU. the more mosfets that a motherboard has, the better CPU voltage regulation the board will have. things like vdroop are less likely to occur particularly when the CPU is under stress and/or OCed. but, for more details, check it out on wiki for a good start

Re: building another system which motherboard??

I am also looking for a good DDR3 mobo right now for my rebuild. My PSU litterally blew up after 5 years and took my 1 year old Gigabyte with it.

I have used Asus and Gigabyte boards. I really do a lot of research on a great mobo before I buy cause it is the most important peice of your system.

I am going DDR3 now while it's new. Shit if my mobo died like 2 months ago and I went DDR2 I would be pissed. Thay always make better stuff AFTER you buy something.

I think I am going to get this Asus. I have read a bunch of reviews from various sites and right now it's the best.
Newegg.com - ASUS M4A79T Deluxe AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Oh and throwing this processor in it cause it is amazing for the $
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - Processors - Desktops

Only issue I can see with that board is you won't get x16 speed on both PCI-E video card slots the chipset is P45 not X48. I haven't had much of a chance to look for ya but that's about what I paid for my GA-X38-DQ6 a year ago.

Re: building another system which motherboard??

even with 2 HD4870's in crossfire on a P45 board where each slot is limited to 8x pci-ex speeds... doesn't seem to affect the performance figures at all.

(just my own personal experience dealing with that)

OK thanks for the feedback and Chaos I think is trying this out as well right now. Thing is though if there is no difference in performance why have the X48 board?

i ran through 3DMark 06 as a quick test and scored 18236 or roughly 700 points higher then the P35 chipset with all the same components
