Need to modify home network.
First off, I'm network dumb, so I sorry if this is a stupid question. I have a home network setup with a wirless router and dsl modem. I want to move the main computer (connected via ethernet cable) that the network was setup on to another room but leave the modem and router where it is since there are 2 other computers hard wired (ethernet cable) to it (the router). My question is, can I put a wireless adapter card in the computer that I want to move without having to setup a new network configuration. Or do I have to setup the network from a computer that is connected via ethernet cable? I'm not so concerned about file and printer sharing as I am with the internet connection getting to all the computers. Thx in advance for any help or advice.

Re: Need to modify home network.
Is this right:
You have 3 computers attached to your router. The one that hosts the network you want to move. Does this affect the others? Does it have to be wireless? If so, i can't help. sorry You could just route an ethernet cable through the wall to the other room (same as before, from router to computer except different room). **EDIT: just read your older post (saying wireless only). sorry i can't help you, good luck with the problem.

Re: Need to modify home network.
I'm far from a network pro, but depending on your router/dsl modem you may be able to do this. When I setup my network at home with the supplied by verizon wireless/wired router/dsl modem, they made it sound like my system directly attached to the router was vital to internet access by all the other systems.
At the time I had one wired system down stairs that I "had to" install the supplied CD software on and a wireless system upstairs. I have since moved the router/modem upstairs with two completely different systems attached (sometimes 3) and two different wireless systems one down stairs and one in the basement. The system that I installed the original "network stuff" on doesn't even exist anymore and during all these changes I never installed anything other than network card drivers for each system........ in other words all the "network stuff" on the supplied CD from verizon was bull and not needed for internet access or my network. All my mis-matched hardware talks fine to each other and to the internet with no issues....... The router/modem is handling it all without a dedicated system doing part of the work. Any or all can be used at anytime and I don't leave my stuff running 24-7. Right now my modem is on upstairs and I'm on one of my wireless systems downstairs.... nothing else is running. (my normal everyday situation) Other router/modem setups may be different but mine works without a dedicated wired system.

Re: Need to modify home network.
Thx for the replies. I appreciate your input. I guess I'll just get the wireless card for the computer and install it before moving it. And if all the computers (3 desktop and 1 laptop) still have internet access, then I'll do the move. Thx again.

Re: Need to modify home network.
I hope it will work for you, note that my system is a wireless router and dsl modem all in one unit.... if yours is two units I'm not sure how it would go for you. Might or might not work the same.... I'm no pro at this. If it doesn't work by just swapping in the wireless card could you use one of the others that will still be attached via ethernet cable as the network unit? That would be a software setup like your "main" unit is now......
There's got to be a way to work this out short of drilling holes and running wire. Best
