Internet dead...

Hi guys

I hope someone can help me out with this problem I have...

I'm using a netgear DG834N modem/router with ADSL24 as my isp. Running windows Vista HP.

Last night it dropped connection to local only saying there was an issue with DNS look ups. This has happened once or twice before but a reboot of the router has fixed it, this time it hasn't. I put in the details for my isp into the router on it's maintenance page and test the connection and it says as follows...

Connection time "00:00:00"
Connecting to server "Disconnect"
Negotiation "LCP is allowed to come up"
Authentication "-"
Getting IP address "-"

I did some faffing about with the router such as trying to get it to autodetect the settings it needs and it says it can't do that it needs DNS information... I got 2 DNS server addresses to put into the router instead of saying "obtain automatically" and that doesn't help. The router itself on the LED no longer lights up the "Chain Link" to show it has a connection though that's obviously par for the course...

I rang ADSL24 and they said everythings fine their end and that line tests indicate everything should be ok and that it probably isnt a DNS error as they would see something on their end and i'm not connected at all.

I have yet to swap out the digital filter on the DSL BT line but will be onto that tomorrow, does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? I've tried using the wired connection, wireless both at the same time and in isolation...

Any help would be much appreciated because no internet really does blow... Sorry for the TL;DR.

Re: Internet dead...

Like kris said, reset to factory settings, then setup the modem to your ISP settings. After that check the DSL line status and the ISP authentication, if it is up you can test different DNS servers - for example the Comodo DNS servers.

... and the digital fiter you mentioned, is it something for increasing the SNR? If it is so it would make sense - dead filter could cause a low SNR on the line and connection errors.

Re: Internet dead...

Yeah I reset to factory settings a couple of times after trying various things. I was advised to upgrade the firmware on the router and did so, everything went smoothly or looked like it did and the router rebooted itself and now won't respond on it's maintenance page at all...

I think the box is dead, hope so - least it'll be a quick job of just swapping it out. I'll swap it over tonight and see if that helps any [along with another digital filter].

Thanks for support thus far.
