Re: Front USB ports

what device were you trying to use? I've noticed with many PC front panel USB ports that they don't have enough juice for high-power devices like external hard-drives or other bus-powered devices

Re: Front USB ports

Re: Front USB ports

Just remember that this:

Pins:
. . . . . (pin 1 on the far left, last pin in this row not used)
. . . .

Wires (in order of pins):
e
VCC, -5, +5 , Ground

or

VCC, -D, +D, Ground

or

Red, White, Green, Black

I did it this way as I've seen the connectors labeled as such on some cases.

There are rare cases where the header will be slightly different, such as one row being backwards with the grounds at the far ends (5th pin, and not the 4th pin), but not so with your board.

Oh, and usually Asus gives you those risers to make installing the front panel, and USB connectors more easily... ditch them. I find that they can be loose, and will pop off really easily, so do yourself a favor, and directly attach the connectors to the board.

Re: Front USB ports

Thanks Tipstaff , I will try that in one of cases I gave up after trying some combination , there some nice cases that make the pins attached together so you can hook it up easily with no pain figuring the right place of each pin.

Re: Front USB ports

You might double check to make sure that you didn't plug that cable into the IE 1394 (Firewire) header on the MB. It's very easy to do that, as they both have the same layout. Don't ask my how I know about that

Look in your manual. On page 2.2.1 (at least in the manual I just D/Led from Asus) the firewre header is #17, and the two USB headers are #15. All three are at the bottom edge of the board.

Re: Front USB ports

make sure that the connector was not put in improperly as its very easy to plug one in and find that you missed 2 pins on an asus board....

also, the USB cable that you plug into the board may have come out of the USB headers.... i noticed in many cases, this cable is removable..... but hard to put back without dismantling the case

Re: Front USB ports

The MoBo came with a panel that holds two USB ports and a firewire i will try that and if it works its probably the cable

UPDATE: It worked so it must be a cable problem

Now you know why I mentioned about ditching them. They're supposed to make life easier, but I tend to find the opposite of them.

Glad you got it sorted.

I haven't had any issues with Asus' Q-Connector on my rig, which has made the trip into 3 different cases not to mention frequent cleanings and cable management attempts along with two other rigs belonging to some friends although I can see how less connections over all can potentially mean less headaches like this.

I do find that you have to give them one extra little push before you connect the block to the header on the motherboard just to ensure they are where they should be.

Besides, the front panel USB ports run off of a USB header, which Asus doesn't include a Q-Connector for...at least not in any of the boards I have ever owned.
