Motherboard/RAM opinion

Just need a quick opinion on my choice of upgrades. Thinking about going for the NForce 2 based Abit NF-7 and GEiL golden dragon DDR in the form of two 256mb chips for dual channel operation with a 333FSB AthlonXP 2600+. Going for the around $300 mark and this matches that up to just about $300 quite nicely. Opinions or suggestions would be very helpful since this would be the first time I haven't used a VIA chipset in my AMD boxen, thanks.

I didn't have very good luck with the Geil Golden Dragon......got a pair of the 3200 sticks last week....would work just fine at 333 with the XP2600+ (333) processor and 3 different nForce 2 MB's, but would not over clock with a crap. Yes it could of been defective memory......but I couldn't see that really happening as the Golden Dragon is supposed to be there best memory.....with "hand picked" chips and special quality control.....So I tried it in an Intel system of a buddy's....overclocked like a champ!! Almost 480 mhz!!

My suggestion would be to spend just a little more and get either the Corsair XMS or the OCZ El DDR, I just RMA'd the memory and I am exchanging it for a twin pak of OCZ El DDR (2x 256) PC3200. It seems that most people are having really good luck with this memory.

Good luck and take your time doing the research for the parts you want.

Also....the 2500+ Barton would be a much better deal, and is much more overclockable with much better memory performance......just something to think about.

I will take your advice with the RAM and go with Corsair XMS then as my experience with OCZ has been LESS than pleasing. I was only ever able to get about a 7mhz overclock out of PC2100 DDR and PC133, both supposed hand picked best of breed chips. I will do a bit more research on the 2500+ overclockability. Oh how I wish I could afford the radical prices Intel wants for their chips just so I could OC the heck outta them.

I second the vote to get a 2500+ barton. Our very own Zardon and WYRETHEWOLF are running them overclocked and they really like em. Check out the Overclocking and Modding section to see their results.
