exclamation Looking for Static IP router?

You guys and gals know which one the best around 40 bucks or even up for 50 or even for wireless Static IP address? Reason why I'm going get Time warren cable at 15 megs with roadrunner and power boost. I need it for my computer my mom computer and my ps3 so it won't share the same ip address so won't confusing it self at all. I need to know by this Friday or so. I'm going order cable and be ready installed on Jan 5 at my new home.

Don't they all have such a feature? Unless you mean your wanip, in which case you have to contact your isp.

I'm confused by this. The DHCP can't mess this up, but you might want to turn it off and assign them manually for security reasons.

note: I'm tired and I probably didn't read this post correctly.

Re: Looking for Static IP router?

robert, you need a ruter that has feature called NAT it gives you full range of class C subnet's IP's ... Like 192.168.1.XXX so you then have all the IP's from 1 to 255 all yours. So then all you need to do is to set the IP's by hand to the OS's IP settings... I hear that some d-link routers has feature where you can freeze the ip's given by the dhcp server of the router so that they would not change, I have that feature in use at home....

Re: Looking for Static IP router?

Find your self a basic Linksys, like Newegg.com - LINKSYS WRT54GL

there are many linksys wrt versions supported here Router Database | www.dd-wrt.com

Flash it with their firmware and you'll get a whole lot of new things to play with. I havent done this in bout year and and a half, i have a neutered model with half the hadrware spec of others, there for i have to use a micro version. friend of mine just got this model from newegg n flashed it over no prob, said you have to flash to the micro first and then the newest.

check it out n read around abit at the dd-wrt site. i think you'll like the firmware.

Yeppers.

I set this up for a friend with his desktop, laptop and PS3. The router reserved those IP's for each device after setting it up through the router web page although I don't think it was a D-Link. Regardless each device had a unique IP that was setup in the OS just as Temeteus said.

Re: Looking for Static IP router?

As Optix suggested, most D-Link routers have a feature called Static DHCP, or DHCP Reservation (my D-Link DIR-655 has this function). You basically tell the router to always assign such and such IP to such and such computer name/MAC address. I usually recommend people that are thinking about doing static IPs to go this route instead. There are extra steps you need to take into consideration, and issues that can crop up when using static addressing that this type of thing overcomes. The biggest thing is that it can take longer to search for computers on the internal network. This has to do WINS, or more specifically the fact that the machine won't be getting any NetBIOS info from the router. This is especially troublesome when using wireless machines to any other machine, be them wired or wireless, on the network. It can take a long time to find machines, if at all. Not a problem with Vista or Windows 7, but on older OS's this can be a real pain in the ass.

If you do decide to go with static IPs here is a really simple way to set things up on each machine that will make things almost fool proof.

IP Address: 192.168.2.x (base this on your routers IP)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (this is based on the above range)
Gateway: Routers IP
Primary DNS: Routers IP
Secondary DNS: blank (don't fill this in)

Since your router knows what your Internet providers Primary and Secondary DNS addresses are all you need to do is point your computer to the router, and it will point you where you need to go. Saves you from ever having to edit them again if your ISP changes their servers. Of note, if you have trouble seeing computers on the network one option to try would be to go into the "Advanced" section of your TCP/IP settings, and add your routers IP to the WINS pool. On the same note, if you are using XP or below, in that same section check the box to use NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Re: Looking for Static IP router?

Even with most routers and a DHCP server you can still set a manual ip and get it to stay the same though

If you're referring to your isp however, gotta pay for static normally.

"DHCP server supports static lease management"

That's listed in the specs for that router, which "should" be the same thing as what I described in my earlier post.
So, rather than assigning static IPs for every machine just use the router to do it (it should be as simple as having each computer connect to the router, which will then show up in the DHCP lease section of the router, then taking that and reserving each computer an address that you want).

Oh, and do yourself a favor: once you get it set up, with all the computers having an assigned address, backup the configuration to a file somewhere so you never have to do it again. I learned that one the hard way.
