buying a new router
Hey all,
Okay so I am sick of this. Every time my current router gives me some issues and I decide on getting a new good solid one, it starts working properly again. It is the reason why I have stuck with it all the time, apart from procrastination/being lazy. But it recently died on me again and this time I won't bother at all, I'm just gonna get myself a new one. I've only done a rather short search, but I found the legendary Linksys WRT54GL and the D-Link DIR-600 which is also under consideration. Which one would you guys suggest and WHY? Something else I would like to be able to do is to be able to host mini game servers. Sometimes I create a game online on my PC and me and a bunch of other guys kill time, usually in Q3 and CS. I've seen routers that cannot do this even if you get all the settings right, so consider this to be another requirement. Also, if you guys have some other suggestions, post them here, especially if you're using them and they've proven to be damn good. i don't intend to spend much, probably US$80 at most. My primary needs are decent built-in features, good easy to use software and superb performance (ofcourse). I don't need stuff like wireless-N etc but it's a plus if I can get them in this price range. Thanks in advance. |

Re: buying a new router
The Linksys router, for the reason of DD-wrt.
Router Database | www.dd-wrt.com The firmware + linksys hardware is simply unstoppable. It looks like the Dlink one will work, but I've had many hardware troubles with their routers in the past. My money goes to linksys always, and I donated to DD-wrt for their awesome firmware. |

Re: buying a new router
yea that's exactly why i was considering the Linksys too, and this one's a very well known router.
I've heard that D-Link are also pretty good, didn't know they had troubles. the wireless 150 means a better stronger signal which is something i saw as a plus. i'll look around some more, in the meantime keep posting guys ![]() thanks |

Re: buying a new router
People have got the WRT54GL's to go up to 2 Kilometers, it really just depends on how good the antennas you hook up to it are.
Linkysys obviously doesn't ship them with Hi-gain. But yea.I just picked up the WRT610Nv2 myself. Couldn't be happier, though the tftp flashing made me nervous, because it didn't take the first time. |

Re: buying a new router
I also have the WRT54GL, nice device, but it doesn't supports Draft N, which is the standard by now.

Re: buying a new router
i find it funny how some routers are really region specific....
Because the linksys routers, ever single one i've used or have come across i've ended up replaceing with dlink due them failing/notworking or just being outright troublesome. Personally i've been running a DIR-650 here at work as the free wireless service that has incredible range and has had several people on it at once with zero issues. Quite impressed with it. The DIR-615's are the lowest model wireless router i sell and i haven't had any complaints about it. The DIR-625's are realy nice though.

Re: buying a new router
I have the WRT54GL running tomato for about a year and a half now.
I don't really have any systems using N yet so I bought that. There are also some Asus ones that are DD-WRT compatible and could be slightly cheaper, although I have no experience with those models. |

Re: buying a new router
If what you need is 10/100Mbps LAN and G-WiFi, then the Asus WL500G Premium is fine, supports custom firmwares. But if you ask me, it's time to let 100Mb network die a peaceful death.
The Linksys WRT54GL is a comparable router. The "L" in the name is very important for DD-WRT compatibility. If you want something useful, get the Asus RT-N16, an 10/100/1000Mbps LAN an N-WiFi router, that has a 32MB firmware space and 128 DDR main system memory. They are still working on a good firmware for it, the original one installed on the unit is not the greatest, but you can use DD-WRT. |
