Sad Wife having problems

My mother-in-law had a pretty serious stroke some time back, and needs 24hr. care. My wife now spends the week at her house (200+ miles from here), and is wanting to setup a wireless network for her lappy.

She has a Westell 6100 modem and a Linksys WRT54G. Now, I had been using that Linksys here, connected to a Westell 6100, and it was working just fine.

When she tries to use it with the 6100 up there, it appears that the Linksys is not 'connecting' to the Westell. While both Westell's are '6100s' they do have different model numbers. It's interesting that my Westell used 192.168.200.1 as it's IP and hers uses 192.168.1.1 (the same as the Linksys). This may be what is causing the problem.

With the Linksys connected she can access it by going to 192.168.1.1 in her browser, but can not access the Westell, nor can she get online. The only way she can access the Westell, or the net, is by plugging into it and using 192.168.1.1 in her browser.

So, how do we get the Westell and Linksys to 'talk' to each other?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Re: Wife having problems

I just read a similar thread on another site and they had to configure the 6100 to Bridged mode then connect to the router. Not sure if this will help but worth a look. Also not sure if this is specific to Verizon only.

First, if your ISP is Verizon and you have DHCP (not PPPoE) you will most likely need to get the MAC address of the 6100 and c

Re: Wife having problems

I'm not sure I understood correctly, but if I did, then there are two devices in her configuration which both use the same IP address, 192.168.1.1, which is why she cannot see one of the devices ant they can't talk to each other. Change the address of one of them to 192.168.1.2, or some other 192.168.1.x address, whatever is available, just don't pick the same IP that the PC uses and it can't be 255 or 0) and it should be fine.

Re: Wife having problems

Usually, in this case, you'd need to have the router plugged into the modem, remove the power cable to the modem, wait about 15s and plug it back in then do the same to the router.
You can fight against all logic until you're blue in the face but even though routers & switches are designed to talk to each other just by being in the same subnet they often need to be rebooted. The same goes for PCs.

Re: Wife having problems

Yeah changing them to different ip addresses should work out well. That is what I always have to do for people who use a modem/router thing and then want to plug it in to their own router in their home.

If that doesn't work then bridging is a little bit different. when you setup the modem as a bridge it basically just acts like a network port and loses all resilient functions as a router etc and just provides internet access to the router plugged into it.
